Ever Wonder What Happened to Patriot Plaza Fountain?

We found out why the landmark went dry.

The sound of the fountain outside the Baltimore County Circuit Court was once one of those signs of summer.

But that sound's gone silent. On a recent trip to the court, it occurred to me that I couldn't remember the last time the fountain was running. So I asked county spokeswoman Ellen Kobler.

She said in an email the fountain was shut off for good some months ago, though she didn't know exactly when.

"The fountain has leaked into the building below for years," she wrote. "Engineers have determined that the problem is simply not fixable, probably a design flaw from the beginning. As a result, the fountain will not be turned back on.  At the present time, there are no plans to replace it."

So that raises the question: What do you do with it?

"Maybe we'll plant flowers in there," joked Nancy Hafford, executive director of the Towson Chamber of Commerce.

Since it is a round, dense piece of block that occupies prime space at the courthouse and does nothing I suggest we dedicate it in the name of Kevin Kamenetz.

That is, if Fred says that's okay.

Instead of flowers, why not plant trees that will eventually provide shade. Add benches around the fountain and maybe a few tables and you have a wonderful place for a brief intermission to view Towson's coming and goings during the course of a day.

Seeing the size of the trees around here, probably one large tree would do, though we'd have to wait until it grew to fill the space. Maybe flowers around it until it did grow sizable though.

There are offices and server rooms for the county beneath the plaza. Thus, plants or trees might not be feasible because they require watering. That is unless they fix the leaks. There's actually a tunnel between the old and new courthouse, and the county office building.

It's not fixable, or it would cost more to fix it than anyone cares to pay?
