County Firefighter Charged with Producing, Possessing Child Porn

Owings Mills resident Anthony Maurice Cottle, 23, faces up to 70 years in prison plus a lifetime of supervised release.

A Baltimore County Fire Department firefighter was indicted this week on three counts of producing and possessing child pornography.

On Wednesday, a federal grand jury indicted Anthony Maurice Cottle, 23, who was a firefighter for the Baltimore County Fire Department, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Maryland.

The three-count indictment states that, in June and July, Cottle "coerced two minor males to engage in sexually explicit conduct in order to produce two videos."

And, on Sept. 28, "Cottle was in possession of the videos and other images of child pornography," it states.

According to the release, Cottle was held at U.S. District Court during his initial appearance on Thursday, and on Friday a U.S. magistrate ordered him detained pending trial.

Court records state that his criminal court trial is set for 9:15 a.m. Feb. 6.

According to the release, he faces 15 to 30 years in prison and a lifetime of supervised release for each of the two counts of producing child pornography. In addition, he faces 10 years in prison for possessing child pornography.

"An indictment is not a finding of guilt," the release states. "An individual charged by indictment is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty at some later criminal proceedings."

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood.

I don't think you can paint with that broad a paint brush. To generalize in such a fashion is a bit unfair and doesn't represent all. Your comment makes you seem to have some sort of agenda.

This is not true and my family and I will stand behind him always. This is not the kind of oerson he is. Before you saying something not worth saying just know there are two sides to every story and tour only hearing one of them.

I agree. We will soon hear 'both sides' in a public court room. And if there is a reasonable explanation most will understand. But I have to tell you, once an indictment is handed down by the legal system most think that there is a presumption of guilt. And that the prosecutor would not indict without just cause. If he is innocent I just hope he can prove it in court.

Keep in mind that someone sick enough to engage in sexual activity with a child, let alone produce photos and videos of those children, would have no conscience. They're going to tell you whatever you want to hear to make you comfortable leaving your children around him. Do you have children? Would you feel 100% comfortable leaving your children with someone even facing these charges or having photos and videos on him when they arrested him? If so, then maybe your head needs examination too. There's actually 3 sides... his side, their side and the truth. I hope you can live with yourself after knowing the truth when it comes out at trial. I feel bad for your children if you have them.

Not sure how someone is aprehended with those things and is innocent? Obviously he has some pretty odd fetishes!

I hear you. But when you say 'odd fetishes' in todays world it seems nothing is "odd" anymore to many. What was once considered to be abhorent is now considered 'normal'. It's a slippery slope downward in morality. We've seen the errosion of the family, 'abortion on demand', same sex marriage and now the move towards man/boy love. What we now consider odd fetish will be legal tomorrow.

Sounds as though he has some issues that need to be addressed. His head isn't straight, for sure. 70 years, though? Murder gets you less. Is he homosexual? Were the boys he 'coerced' his concubines? There are some really gray areas here, legally speaking. Morally it's reprehensible. But we are talking about appearing before a court of the law. With all the permissiveness in our society the proliferation of such behavior is almost to be expected. We need to back up and remember Our Father's statutes. Else it's only going to get worse.

Poorly sad Al. Do you ask if someone is heterosexual when they are caught with child pornography involving little girls? No you don't. You have a problem with homosexuals, you don't like them, I've read your posts. Too bad. You don't know if he has a problem or just wants to make money as doesn't care.

That said, if found guilty (I'll bet he will plead so), he would be a capitalistic pig in the strongest sense of the word and needs to spend some serious time behind bars. Our society does not and should not tolerate this kind of behavior towards children. Lock 'em up.

Someone is not going to be locked up on these kinds of charges without enough evidence. Whoever the Karen person is needs to realize that. I sure hope she doesnt have kids it could of possibly happened to or did it and she allowed it? How can anyone stand behind someone who doees such thing to kids. VERY SICK individual. I hope he gets the max penality and gets done to him what he did to others.

The feds must have a massive amount of evidence to charge him with. So now my tax dollars go to giving him a free place to stay with hot meals an education anything he really wants. These criminals have more freedom in jail than i do as a working tax paying citizen. These people that do these things to kids should think about suicide as an option. It will save us tax paying citizens and free up the jails. Or maybe a concept could be to not commit a crime and not mess with young kids. Find someone your own age. This is one sick individual. If i was him i would go for the suicide option.

Completely disgusting. Karen - I'm with the previous commentor. I hope you have no children of your own. To stand behind someone and say for sure that you KNOW he didn't do it is INSANE! He wouldn't be indicted on FEDERAL charges if there wasn't significant evidence proving his guilt. Did you even read the article?! It's not a lie. I hope you can sleep at night knowing that you support someone that abuses children.
