Hillendale Woman Killed, Struck By Car on Crosswalk
The accident occurred early Tuesday morning at Loch Raven and Deanwood Road.
A Hillendale woman was killed after she was reportedly struck by a vehicle early Tuesday morning.
Renee Else Thomas, 78, of the 6600 block of Wycombe Way was pronounced dead at the scene near the intersection of Loch Raven Boulevard and Deanwood Road, said Louise Rogers-Feher, a Baltimore County Police spokeswoman.
At around 5:39 a.m., a 2006 Nissan Sentra driven by Sandra Lee Beck, 50, of the 6600 block of Loch Hill Road, was traveling northbound on Loch Raven Boulevard, Rogers-Feher said. Beck's Sentra hit Thomas as she was walking along a crosswallk near the Parkville intersection.
Beck had the green light, according to Rogers-Feher.
Police have ruled the accident was the result of pedestrian error.

what is walking along a crosswalk? how do we know she was not in the crosswalk? do we have to stop if someone is in the crosswalk but we have a green light?

"TA- 21-501. Pedestrians subject to traffic regulations:
At an intersection, a pedestrian is subject to all traffic control signals."
In other words, if at an intersection there is a crosswalk and signal for pedestrians (the orange hand or white walking stick person signal), the pedestrian must follow those signals. If you have a green light and someone walks out in the road without heeding the signal, it's their fault. Mind you, I wouldn't go running over people when they jaywalk...that's not a good idea.

An older person may not be able to (1) walk the distance to sparsely placed crosswalks and be compelled to jaywalk; (2) be able to walk quickly enough to cover the distance in the time allowed by the signal light: or (3) be overwhelmed by the speed and turning lanes of traffic.

This is So Heartbreaking... I guess if she wasnt in the cross walk its OK to run her down? What was the Women who was driving doing that she couldnt clearly see the woman crossing the street? =( SO Sad..

I have always been told the pedestrian has the right away, even more so if she was in the cross walk. People fly up and down those roads. Very unfortunate, god rest her poor soul!!

Me too, I was told that the pedestrian always has the right of way...when did this change? I still drive with the pedestrian safety in mind, all this time I was "breaking the law?"...ohhh my bad...
