A judge has denied a request for a new trial for George Huguely, the Chevy Chase man convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend, according to news reports.

In February, Huguely was convicted of second-degree murder in the 2010 slaying of Yeardley Love, of Cockeysville, MD. Both played lacrosse at the University of Virginia.

A hearing went forward in a Charlottesville courtroom Wednesday during which a Charlottesville Circuit Judge Edward Hogshire considered a defense request for a new trial.

"I think there was overwhelming evidence to support the conviction," Hogshire said at the end of the two-and-a-half-hour hearing, according to news outlets.

Huguely's defense cited a series of errors on the part of the prosecution in arguing for a new trial.

Huguely is set to be sentenced Aug. 30. A jury has recommended he spend 26 years in prison.
