New Tenant For Former Joppa Road Giant
The vacancy in Joppa Heights shopping center will be filled by a Savers, Inc. store.
A commercial vacancy in the Joppa Heights shopping center has a new tenant: Savers, Inc.
The new store will take over space left vacant when Giant moved out of the shopping center back in March 2007 and bring about 40 new jobs to the area, according to a statement from Fifth District Councilman David Marks announcing the new shop.
According to the company website, Savers is a thrift store whose "inventory comprises unique, quality used goods as well as new merchandise, including closeouts on great items not found at other thrift stores."
A shopping tour on the site shows that they offer men's, women's and children's clothing as well as housewares, collectibles and furniture.
Patch wrote about the former Giant supermarket site in the Visions for Vacancies column back in February—back then readers suggested everything from a Trader Joe's to a family fun center for the location.
What do you think about the new store moving into the shopping center? Does it fit with your ideas about the kinds of businesses the community needs? Will you shop there? Let us know your thoughts! Tell us in the comments.

I'm a little disappointed, isn't there a Salvation Army AND Goodwill just a few blocks away? I'm not sure the community needs another one, so close in proximity. A Trader Joe's would have been fantastic. *Sigh*

The inevitable Trader Joe's comment, repeated endlessly here over and over. Using your own logic - there is a Trader Joes two miles away. Or I suppose, would you rather it sit empty until the company that you want moves in?

On the contrary. I would like whatever business to go in there to be successful so that it STAYS occupied. I just don't see why it's necessary to have 3 of these stores mere blocks away from one another. I don't think it bodes well for their survival which will then leave more vacancies to fill. If the Trader Joe's comment is "repeated here over and over", then maybe it's an establishment that a lot of ppl in our community would like to see, which means a lot of ppl would patronize it, which means it would be successful. Hmmmm

another BIG LOTS type of store where we don't need one, the economy probably will support this type of store but a fun center would have been nice too.

That particular property has a lease stipulation that prohibits any store that sells any kind of food or drink from opening there. (can't remember why... i just remember this because someone i know used to work with the group that owns it) Anyway, that's probably why it took so long to get a new tenant and why it ended up being another crappy discount store....

Lance Beasman - have you tried The Fresh Market - across the street from the Towsontown Mall ? TFM is not as large as a Whole Foods but it is a very nice alternative. Stop in there on Saturdays for tastings.

In response to the snarky comment regarding "Trader Joe's over and over again," Perhaps Mrs. H was thinking of the inconvenient parking situation where the current Trader Joe's sits and was thinking it would relocate rather than duplicate the store a mere "2 miles" away, but about 20 minutes by the time you find a place to park. Love TJ's. Refuse to go there.

So dissapointed to here about this new "thrift" store coming to the area. Would of loved to see a Kohl's or a Trader Joe's ! Sounds like another junk shop!

Why does everyone keep saying Trader Joe's, is it a joke. You all can't be serious, there is literally one not five miles away from the exact location. It's not like the company drops stores on every street corner like a Wal Greens. The location is awful, so bad that Giant left. It has been vacant for several years now, be happy there is something there at all. And Kohls? Seriously?

Kohls does sound like a nice alternative.

I am not very pleased. We need a few good stores like trader Joe's , Sofies Crepes, etc. something other than another discount store. disappointed.

I don't think we really need another discount store, seeing as we already have a bunch of those around- Kmart across the street, Walmart and the new HomeGoods store both two miles away, Good Stuff Cheap.
Kristen, what were you interested in the store for?

Chris- yes seriously, Kohl's! There's a goodwill, salvation army, and good stuff cheap all in the area... This area could use some nicer stores. Maybe you don't shop them, but some people do and it's a pain to ride to Abingdon, Cockeysville or Middle River. Just my opinion.... Why is the location considered "so bad?"

Well, I could take a few stabs at your question, but if the nicer stores considered the location to be not "so bad", I think they would have developed there by now.

With the way the economy is going, I think a discount store is perfect. And you should change the "Want to leave a comment?" to "Want to start bickering with someone?" Just saying.

I'm not for another thrift store, but I wish them well. Good to see the former Giant established. It's been a long time.

the one thing Savers does that kind of drives me nuts is putting out racks of new, Savers-tagged halloween costumes and accessories in the fall- an entire department in most locations! this is a thrift store after all. why compete with other outfits such as Halloween Adventure and Target? (it's just enough bearable when Goodwill of the Chesapeake often has Target discontinued merchandise on the shelves) personally, i'm more thrilled about the odd pieces that show up in thrifts and lend to much more one-of-a-kind costumes. just think of what potentially cooler items could be out on the floor in place of that pre-fab costume detritus!

I love thrift stores because they have tons of unique things. Also not to start an arguement but, if you would all pay attention you would know that the salvation army...or maybe its the goodwill closed down months ago. The other one that's still open is set to close in the summer. Also people saying parkville is to nice for a thrift store...that's not true I grew up in Belair Maryland which is waaayyyy nicer than parkville and they have some of the nicest thrift stores.
