Obama Family, Actor Bill Murray Watch TU Fall to Oregon State
You'd think the L.A. Lakers had transported its court to Towson University judging by the celebrities in attendance.
(Updated: 6:06 p.m.) For some fans at the Towson Center Arena on Saturday, the fact that there was a basketball game going on may not have been the first thing on their minds.
What the fans got in Towson University's men's basketball home opener against Oregon State included many big names, including President Barack Obama and family, actor Bill Murray, Congressman Dutch Ruppersberger, former Congressman Tom McMillen and San Antonio Spurs star (and former Tiger) Gary Neal.
The dignitaries were among a crowd of 3,119 who watched the Tigers (0-5) fall to the Oregon State Beavers (5-1), 66-46.
The Obamas were on hand to cheer on the Beavers and coach Craig Robinson, First Lady Michelle Obama's brother. The president and first lady sat courtside, while daughters Sasha and Malia sat nearby.
Murray was there to watch the home debut of his son, Luke, a Towson assistant coach. He occasionally posed for photos with fans in the stands.
At one point, Murray walked over to meet the president (The Baltimore Sun has video). Obama also posed for a photo with the Towson University football team following a halftime presentation of their Colonial Athletic Association championship trophy.
Security was tight at the Towson Center as fans were required to pass through metal detectors and Secret Service agents could be seen posted throughout the arena.
The game against Oregon State came about as a result of good planning and a little luck. Oregon State was looking for a game after completing its run through the TicketCity Legends Championship, and Towson was looking for a big home opener.
"We wanted to have something special for our fans because it's been a tough 15-year run here," said Towson athletic director Mike Waddell, referring to Towson's track record on the court.
Waddell added that Towson is signed for two games at Oregon State in upcoming seasons.
The Obamas have attended nearby Oregon State games before, at George Washington in 2009 and Howard in 2010. Waddell said he was eager to schedule the game with those famous fans in mind, but it wasn't until last Friday that Waddell's office got word from the White House that Obama would indeed be attending the game, the closest Oregon State will get to Washington, DC this season.
What followed were meetings, phone calls, emails, Secret Service visits and even a Friday test run by Marine One. The president's helicopter landed on a lacrosse and soccer practice field near Towson Center.
Robinson and his players are used to the attention. Some of them have played in front of the president three times. And despite the pressure, it was just another game for Towson and its first against a Pac-12 conference foe.
It was "a great atmosphere for a college basketball game," said first-year Coach Pat Skerry. "Hopefully that's something that can become the norm here at Towson University."
"It was really exciting as far as the president coming, but basketball is always exciting to me," said sophomore forward Marcus Damas, who had a career-high 18 points and 10 rebounds. "Coach did a good job of preparing us for the game."
Towson's preparation showed early in the game, as they led or tied with the Beavers until the second half of the first period. The Beavers' Challe Barton dropped a three with 6:56 left in the first to bring the score to 20-18, and Oregon State never looked back, at one point leading by 24 points.
The Tigers out-rebounded Oregon State, 38-23, but committed 21 turnovers to Oregon State's 10. Four Beavers players scored in the double digits.
"Until we rectify as a staff and what the players do taking care of the basketball, we're going to have some long nights," Skerry said.
If you have photos of the president and his family or Murray, add them to this story.
ORIGINAL POST: Nov. 25, 7:55 p.m.
President Barack Obama and his family will attend a Saturday basketball game atTowson University, the school announced Friday.
The Obamas will be at the Towson Center Arena to watch the Towson Tigers men's basketball team take on the Oregon State Beavers, coached by First Lady Michelle Obama's brother, Craig Robinson.
The university encourages fans to arrive early for the game, due to the anticipated crowds and security measures. The gates to the Towson Center Arena will open at noon, and fans must be in their seats by 1:45 p.m. for the 2 p.m. tipoff.
Obama will be the first president to visit Towson University, according to Waddell.
The Obamas have traveled to see Oregon State's games in the Washington, DC, area, most recently to George Washington in 2009 and Howard in 2010.
Towson is the Beavers' final East Coast stop this season, and the closest they'll get to DC. Oregon State (4-1) is coming off a trip to East Rutherford, NJ, for the TicketCity Legends Classic Championship, where it beat Texas 100-95 in overtime, then lost to Vanderbilt, 64-62.
Robinson was hired as head coach in 2008.
First-year coach Pat Skerry's young Towson (0-4) team—which returned no starters from last year's lineup—comes home after a tough stretch that included nationally-ranked Kansas, Michigan and Belmont in the mainland round of the EA Sports Maui Invitational.
The game will be broadcast on WBAL-AM and ESPN3.com.

I clicked on the link to look at the sweater. It is more appropriate for one of the girls. Mrs. Obama is too old to be wearing something emblazoned on her chest. i disagree with anyone who says shes "put together". The whole bunch of them look like they just stopped by the Whitehouse to put in an appearance. Wait!! President Obama is going to beat any of the GOP contenders. Romney is their best bet and when Obama runs ads of Romney shaking hands with Teddy Kennedy over the Romenycare bill he signed as governor, that will be just about it for old Mitt.

Sean's probably right. The sooner the right figures this out, and gets on the Jon Huntsman bandwagon, the sooner they'll be closer to taking back the White House.
Huntsman is Romney, without the flip flops, baggage, and actually understands WTF is going on in the world outside of the country - while consistency recognizing that the best foreign policy starts with good economic policy at home.
He's not perfect, but he's the only Republican candidate in my view who'll win Independents. Romney would if he wasn't such a waffling mess, and actually Gingrich could if he wasn't effectively bi-polar. One debate he's thoughtful and thought provoking, the next he's irrational and a bitter.
Sean Tully

Huntsman! Oh, please send him up against Obama. Please! Seriously, the GOP would be better off with Ron Paul as their candidate. They'd still lose, but it wouldn't be as bad as the defeat Huntsman would take.

Sean: Couldn't disagree more. I know several Democrat friends personally who'd vote for Huntsman over Obama, and there seems to be all sorts of love for the guy over on HuffPo. You would make it sound like most Democrats like Obama. That's cute.
The Republican party won't get out of its own way, one way or the other. Huntsman is a man who believes in science, so this makes him a heretic in his own party.

Sean: Obama is mediocre at best in a debate format. Don't confuse giving a scripted speech/pep talk with actually debating. President Obama is GREAT at the former.
As a very centrist Republican (not too dis-similar to what you'd call a Blue Dog Democrat - sometimes I wonder if this is how I'd really classify myself),what I've seen in the past two years is President Obama positioning himself towards the center once again, after his party got hammered in the mid-term election.
Unless the GOP gets over themselves, and Grover, they are going to lose. Independents and those disenfranchised with both parties will determine who the next president is using the "who's less terrible" test.
We actually agree in the belief that President Obama is going to win in 2012. I just believe it's because the GOP of today are idiots. They seem to forget that as President Obama's approval rating lingers in the low 40's, Congress's is in the low teens.
That's what happens when you follow the Tea Party. instead of standing up to them, and letting them sabotage enough elections to put the Dems in power (that'll show them!), they gave in and let the village idiots run the show.
President Obama has screwed oh so much up this term. However, all the GOP has done is played roadblock against the President and then turning around and saying "He's doing nothing". Only a grossly uninformed individual would actually buy into this load of tripe. The rest of us just find it disgusting.
Tim
11:53 pm on Sunday, November 27, 2011
To finish up, the Republicans need to abandon the Norquist promise, and send up a well educated moderate to compete against the now centrist President Obama in order to win. I believe that's Huntsman, who has probably forgotten more about foreign policy then Romney currently understands. He did some excellent things in the state of Utah, my brother was a resident during his term as governor.
Additionally, while some pundits seem to believe Obama's had "great foreign policy" I beg to differ. I think he's been positively pedestrian at dealing with Pakistan, China, and Israel. Not to mention his erratic and usually behind schedule interactions in the Middle East.
I can understand those who appreciate Romney in the Republican party, he may just be the better pure problem solver while still being somewhat moderate. Still, the guy's too shifty for my liking. If I had to choose between Romney and Obama in 2012, it'd be a painfully tough choice for me.

Bart, thanks for sharing the Gingrich take on child labor laws. One could look at it in the most negative way....young children scrubbing, cleaning, wiping their sweaty little brows, on hands and knees while other children are out and about playing and enjoying life. I don't really think that is the picture he is presenting, but works well for negative political response. I of course am suggesting that Gingrich is referring to teens ...an opportunity to take some ownership of theirs schools, encouraging and element of pride and the ability to make some decent wages at the same time.
In 1949 (at 9 years old) me and my friend Betty had our own step cleaning business - every Saturday morning in the summer....3 steps per row house 5 cents per house. Our parents did not promote it, but they did not forbid it. And we clearly enjoyed the monetary independence for allowable treats. Getting our hands dirty was never a negative factor. A lesson learned at the age of 9.
I am not promoting scrubbing and cleaning for 9 year olds....simply suggesting that putting a dark cloud on cleaning and being paid for it as a teenager is not the way to look at the bigger picture.
Sean Tully

Lorna, I am not sure you can even hire a kid under the age of 14, and there are laws in place that regulate the employment of kids 14 and 15. (http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=ecfr&sid=48d6ee3b99d3b3a97b1bf189e1757786&rgn=div5&view=text&node=29:3.1.1.1.30&idno=29#29:3.1.1.1.30.3.120.5). So we don't know what Newt was aiming at, but in any event, most people consider a kid 14 or 15 (not to mention younger) a child. There is no way around it. Newt is against child labor laws.
Lorna D. Rudnikas
5:13 am on Tuesday, November 29, 2011
No doubt about it - a kid of 14-15 should be consider a child, because they are children and laws are important to protect them. I suppose each State has laws and there are the Federal laws and then the question is - can a 14-15 year old work at McDonalds so many hours per week and clean up at the end of a shift vs help clean up their school for a specified hourly wage? I suspect that may be the topic at hand not a sweat shop. Jobs to help maintain a school within the community is an honorable job, and should not have a dark cloud put upon it. Fast food restaurants/carry outs are ideal for some teens, but not every teen is happy to work at McDonalds...... Some work at horse farms cleaning stables...now that is necessary for the horses, but not necessarily fun, fun, fun. Hope we don't start an age war to coincide with a class war....yikes!!! Your final sentence is of good shock value, but not necessarily true. I am sure the media will work very hard to give Mr. Gingrich an opportunity to explain in further detail which particular child labor law(s) he is referring to.

Looks to me like the left is grabbing at straws if they are going to make a big deal out of Mr Gingrich's misspeak. It is ridiculous to think that he means that 5 year olds should be mopping up the halls before they leave school every day. Lorna is right, I am sure he means teenagers and there is nothing wrong with a "child" that age doing his share. I worked at 15 and both of my children worked at 15. All three of us WANTED to. My children were brought up just like I was. You don't drive a car until you can buy your own and pay for your own insurance, so if you want to roll you have to work.

Misspeak? It was a prepared speech. He's given this a lot of thought.
And, make no mistake, my kids all had jobs by 15, either at Friendly's or the local Ice Cream Shop. They did landscaping work out of their own truck once they had a license to drive.
They did it because they wanted to.
Newt's plan is very different. Fire all the adult janitors (union), leave one adult "Master Janitor" who oversees a staff of kids. Kids who are forced to work. Sounds like underage slave labor to me.

It's ok for you maybe that candidates fool around, but as a faithful husband myself, I think fidelity is the least we can expect from our leaders, and that goes for both parties, but more so for the GOP, because they are more preachy about trying to tell people how they should be conducting their sex lives.

GOP hopeful Newt Gingrich defended his stance against certain child labor laws during a campaign stop in Iowa Thursday, saying that children born into poverty aren't accustomed to working unless it involves crime."
And it's from Fox, no less:

Perhaps the reference "certain child labor laws" should be more clearly defined. And with regard to "habits" perhaps stats on that particular issue might be helpful. Children living in poverty-no matter the race, creed or national origin, are at a great disadvantage when it comes to "habits.".....not each and every single child perhaps, but probably a healthy majority. And then the question is why? Let us not victimize the children for political reasons and by that I mean lets not jump on the subject to twist, and turn any fact as useful fodder to annihilate a political foe. One thing is for sure, all children (teens 14 and above) need to learn a good work ethic and I suspect many opportunities are overlooked, including cleaning ---be it in McDonalds, Burger King, schools, horse barns, elderly folks in their communities, yards, streams, yada,yada,yada...If it is truly negative go ahead and put a cloud on it, but if it can be positive take a closer look. Of course, we are not even talking about opportunities to volunteer, right??? We are talking working for a wage. And lets not assume the wage will be below minimum and lets focus on children who are citizens. That could work!!!

You just don't get it, Lorna, but it's in your own personal self interest to NOT understand the points raised here. Maintenance is not only mopping floors. Gingrich plans to FIRE the regular maintenance people, forcing the kids in these poor neighborhoods to do the work. Secondly, there's nothing wring with kids working, but VOLUNTARILY. Otherwise, isn't that the definition of slavery?
CAW21227

Bart, what an idiotic thing to say. The republicans are now going to force children into slavery? I am forced to go to work every day if I want to eat, does that mean I'm a slave. If I am getting paid, it's not slavery. And by the way, yes these poor children from bad neighborhoods do need to learn the habits that lead to a better life otherwise, they stay in poverty. But I didnot see anywhere that only poor children were included in this thing Gingrich was talking about. I think he was talking about all kids entering the teenage years. And really, everyone including myself should quit using the label "children", the term brings very young innocents to mind, not the age group we are talking about.

Holy Crap Bart....where did the term FORCE come into this picture. How did I miss that? All this brings to mind something a friend shared with me recently and I would like to in turn, share with you and others...wish I knew the author's name:
An Obituary printed in the London Times.....Absolutely Brilliant!
"Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years......No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.
He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
- Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
- Why the early bird gets the worm;
- Life isn't always fair;
- and maybe it was my fault.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).
His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place.
Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition."
It goes on and I will leave this comment to make room for the remainder in the next "comment" block.
Lorna D. Rudnikas
6:06 pm on Thursday, December 1, 2011
Continued as promised honey child:
"Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.
It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.
Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.
Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.
He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;
I Know My Rights
I Want It Now
Someone Else Is To Blame
I'm A Victim
Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone."
and then I was asked to...
If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.
Somehow this just seems to have a "fit" for this conversation, but then, I might just possibly be missing something.

No, it doesn't fit, but that's OK. Actually your wonderful quote isn't a quote at all, and ceratinly not from the London Times, as many of these "pearls" have been attributed to George Carlin, Andy Rooney and Bill Cosby. It's just drivel, glommed together and used as folk lore by people who can't come up with their own original ideas.

I am really surprised the "Government control" conspiracy theorists are popping the fire crackers over Newt's proposal. If janitors are fired and poor kids do the work (presumably for much cheaper, especially considering the GOP is against minimum wage), wouldn't "the government" have an incentive to keep kids poor? It would save them money in the long run.

Lorna, I was thinking of you this morning while reading the Sun's editorial on the new "welfare Queen" attacks by the GOP. They raised a good point that perhaps you'd like to answer. Why is it "class warfare" when people say the rich should pay more in taxes but it is not when people attack those on food stamps?
Lorna D. Rudnikas
6:02 pm on Sunday, December 4, 2011
Hi Sean.... Perhaps yours should be first in line on the Sun article. I have been very straightforward about where my thoughts are when it comes to so-called "classes" of population. I am a tried and true member of the "worker bee" group and have no issues with any true "bees" no matter the level of their economic status. In America, for whose who like to banter the term "class" around it touches too much on my memory of first reading about the French Revolution...Yikes!!! But, as long as we continue on the subject...I found an interesting description regarding class and how the term is used in American society....shall I share it with you for what ever benefit you might be able to garner from it?: Some think that the "upper classes" include CEOs, politicians, and people who work in highly specialized careers like doctors." As you can only imagine, I am gingerly drawn to and absolutely love that "politicians" are nestled in the description, honey child? My current "class warfare" concern is with the political folks (professional and otherwise) who diligently focus on separating people into "classes" for the specific purpose of prompting a Machiavellian agenda...one specifically meant to thwart a positive outcome for our wonderful citizens. Divide and conquer as in "class warfare" is despicable and deserves to be thoroughly routed.

Wars are started because someone has something the other wants or needs (land, oil, power, money, natural resources etc.) not to say that is the only reason for war. It is called "class warfare" because the rich have the money and power that the poor and middle class want. The poor have nothing that anyone else wants or needs therefore no "warfare"
Sean Tully

The poor may not have anything anyone else wants, but every four years the GOP pull out some form of the Reagan "welfare Queen" scenario. This year it's Newt's "urban criminal poor". Notice how they never go after all welfare recipients, as many of them are white. We don't have to fear the poor in places like West Virginia, only those in places like West Baltimore.

Class is totally a perception, totally objective.
The right wing wants to protect the rights of a fetus, but once it becomes a child, it is now a burden on society, and the mother is a welfare queen.

That is your opinion...which, on the face of just doesn't make it so, honey child. Can't we just do a clean study on the welfare opportunities in t his country and look across the board to see how, what, where and when and if, in fact, there is too much fraud...and of course, can we just leave the race card out of it. As they use to say in the old detective show on TV, give us the facts and nothing but the facts, so help you God, should be on the table. And then, what???? if I recall correctly, Russia had the equivalent of a welfare state and it ate them up alive. So, lets push for ways to assist people to stand on their own, whenever possible...rather than make it impossible for them to get out from under the "welfare state." Please note the key words WHENEVER POSSIBLE!!

Lorna, You are a good soul. The faces of humanity. The faces of the homeless have changed. Both rich and poor are losing their homes and jobs. Families are stressed and torn apart by this depression. Solutions instead of the blame game. And yes, our soldiers are among the many in need. If the government cant help. How about fund raisers. We can not count on politicians and government to fix everything. Volunteers and non profits, activist, etc. are solutions.. Lets face it, the faces have changed.

Here's the truth about Bill Murray. He almost died after almost drinking himself to death over New Years 2010. He is such a bad alcoholic, that he lost control of severe diabetes and went into diabetic shock. There for a while, they couldn't get his diabetes under control. That's why he wears an insulin pump. He should never be by himself. He's gone into diabetic shock on several occasions....yet refuses to say anything to other people who think he's really cool, and follow his life's pattern believing it'll bring them loads of fun. How's about a future with loads of insulin shots? Bill Murray, please save some lives and stand up!

His choice of friends is rather scary, too. Then again, birds of a feather flock together. They helped Bill lie about what happened to him over New Years, have helped him cover it up, and are helping him continue living this destructive life pattern that will kill him. With friends like that, who needs an enemy? To me, these people sound more like the fabled Siren, than any friend who wants what is best for you. Truth is, psychologically, people gather wagons around causes they love because of what they love for themselves, not because of who or what they love for anybody else's benefit. It's because of people like this, that it doesn't bother me that there really is a such thing as hell.
