Towson Police Warn of BGE Imposters

Sgt. Stephen Fink urges residents to ask for identification from those who come to their homes.

Towson police are asking the community to stay alert for BGE imposters and other illegitimate solicitors.

Two residents on Copeleigh Road recently reported being solicited by men, who claimed to work for BGE, but did not produce proper identification when asked, wrote Sgt. Stephen Fink in an email.

"Please remind your family and neighbors to always request identification of anyone coming to their door requesting information or aid, if they're legitimate they'll have no problem producing it," Fink wrote.

Police said the agency the solicitor claims to represent can always be contacted for verification.

"Don't give out information to anyone you're not familiar with or recognize," Fink wrote.

Residents can also report suspicious people to the police by calling 911.

And how would any citizen know whether what they were shown was "proper identification"?

Mike, I certainly agree with your question. My wish is that these journalists put more incisive information in their articles. Yes we certainly want to know what is going on but we also want to know EXACTLY what the police say we should look for and what EXACTLY a proper identification badge should have.

When did this happen? I live within blocks of there and saw a white "BGE" pickup truck parked on Banbury Rd. on Saturday or Sunday.

It happened in Rodgers Forge last night. There were two young guys claiming to be with IGS (I think). They said they needed to look at my bill to see if BGE was overcharging me.

Had a man and woman come by on foot (Cub Hill area). They didn't identify themselves as BGE workers. They had on badges from some other electric supplier (I'm assuming). But they did have a tablet with a BGE bill on it, saying they weren't selling anything but just wanted to make sure BGE wasn't overcharging me and that they "would wait while I got my bill." Yeah, right. I sent them packing and they look all puzzled, as if I was daft for not wanting to save money. They were walking a fine line with being imposters, however. Never identified themselves as such and wore the badges of this other outfit--but never identified it to me. If I didn't look, I wouldn't have known.

A couple of months ago these people got into our "secure" building and tried the same thing with the exact same lines. I did not let them in and called BGE. BGE said their people would NEVER come knocking on our door (they will only correspond by email or in writing) so don't answer the door!
