Bartenfelder Resurfaces, Franchot Farms for Votes (Maybe)

Peter Franchot stood behind Joe Bartenfelder's farm stand Sunday looking a bit out of place when a woman walked up and wanted to buy some onions and potatoes.

The comptroller who hails from Takoma Park fumbled to open a plastic bag as he added up her purchases.

"That's $4.00," Franchot said as he introduced himself as the chief tax state tax collector.

"How much change do I get back?" the woman playfully fired back.

And just then, Bartenfelder, the former Baltimore County councilman, stepped in.

"Nooo," he said with a smile as he reached for the 10 spot. "We don't let him handle the money."

And so began Franchot's introduction to the crowd and vendors who braved the stormy weather for the Baltimore Farmer's Market Sunday.

The two Democrats forged a friendship when both served in the House of Delegates and were on the Appropriations Committee together.

Both men are now the subject of talk regarding their political futures.

Franchot is considered to be already running for governor in 2014. Some have said his interest in the lack of air conditioning in classrooms in Baltimore City and Baltimore and Garrett Counties is, in part, a set up for that campaign.

If having Bartenfelder introduce him around to the farmers from Harford and Baltimore and Montgomery Counties was part of the campaign, Franchot was admitting to it.

"That's years from now," Franchot said of the 2014 campaign. "I just find getting out and talking to people like this is wonderful."

Bartenfelder has been all but out of politics since his 2010 primary loss to County Executive Kevin Kamenetz. After the wink-wink nod-nod non-endorsement endorsement of Ken Holt, Kamenetz's Republican rival, the farmer from Fullerton has been out of the spotlight save for a few community meetings.

There is speculation Bartenfelder might return to elected politics.

The proposal to redraw the county's seven council districts moves his home out of his former 6th District, which is now represented by Democrat Cathy Bevins. If approved, Bartenfelder, who some describe as a conservative Democrat, would be in the 5th District which is represented by David Marks, a freshman Republican described by some as moderate.

Bartenfelder could also run for the House of Delegates again depending on how the 8th District is redrawn.

Franchot didn't miss the chance to encourage his friend.

"We need more people like you in the Democratic Party," Franchot said.

Bartenfelder isn't saying if either is a serious consideration.

"I'm not saying I am and I'm not saying I won't," said Bartenfelder. "It's just not something I'm putting any weight on right now."

It should be an interesting race. With the MDGOP having such a weak bench and running such a shoddy campaign for Governor last time, whoever wins the Democratic Primary this go 'round is a shoo in.

Was this a staged event or did you just happen to be hanging out at the Farmer's Market?

Robert:

Several media outlets were present and alerted to Franchot's appearance at the market.

Bartenfelder-Franchot...sounds like an interesting dynamic for the 2014 Democratic ticket. The State needs clean, honest, politicians. They would have my vote!

I really like the idea of a Franchot-Bartenfelder Ticket in 2014. I couldn't agree with Mr. Franchot statement more....... "We need more people like you (Bartenfelder) in the Democratic Party"
hot_topic is onto something here! I would vote for Franchot-Bartenfelder in 2014 and I know a lot of other people would too!

I have nothing against David Marks, but I would vote for Joe Bartenfelder every time. He is a fine representative for the people.

If Joe is looking to get back in the political arena, why is he keeping such a low profile?

I would think that he might want to keep his name out there in some way.

Does O'Malley pass the throne to Brown with his blessings, then what?

I'm not so sure Joe is 100% onboard with future politics. This might be more of the party coming calling for him.

Tim, I would say that may be the case. If he was thinking about another bid I would think he might want to keep his name out front in some way.

If Franchot is looking for a running mate there is that stigma that could carry over.

I think based on the set up for a photo-op that was the extent of it. Makes for good copy but only for the short term.

When Joe made his announcement at TU, the place was packed. I talked to a reporter who said at Kamenetz's kickoff the crowd was very small.

I watched Kamenetz and Olszewski sign wave at Merrit and Wise and not much reaction. I thought there was no way Joe was going to lose.

Then came the TV spots and Joe would not fight back. He is a nice guy and maybe that got in the way or he might have been too confident. He had the money to fight back so it was puzzling to me why he didn't.

Joe impressed me as a man of principle. Something our country needs a ton more of.
The sheer fact that he had the 'stones' to actually back Ken Holt, after (as you say) not getting too far into the mud with Kamenetz, made an impression with me and I suspect many other independents and more 'liberal' Republicans in the area.

Tim, when someone takes a shot at you like Kamenetz did at Joe, he had to fight back. That is the nature of the beast.

Part of the problem was they both spent a ton of years on the council and there were issues that were bound to come up if provoked.

There were some issues involving Kamenetz's use of police property and announcing he had the support of the department in his campaign adds. Joe should have challenged that on the issue of conflict of interest.

It's OK to be a nice guy until someone hits you below the belt and then you have to defend yourself.

Kamenetz came out swinging first with his adds and I think Joe was too little too late.

The liberal media in this town would not challenge Kamenetz on the issues. The city rent story was rather lame. The city sets the rates and it's not the renters obligation to tell them how to do their job.

The ratings for local TV news is down and if the Sun gets any thinner there will only be a front page with nothing inside.

Why don't you wait until you can comprehend what you write even when you are looking directly at the sign, as in --- Sea Horse.

You don't quote yourself and the capitalization is not necessary in --- "Conspiracy Theories" --- and your forgot your period again.

Why don't you grow up and act like an adult? Your "LOL Bueller ..." is getting old.

I ran for office down here and had several meetings with Mr. Bartenfelder during the race along with attending numerous other political affairs and debates.

I don't recall ever hearing anything in the political arena involving Robert Armstrong.

I agree with Buzz 100% here in two areas. First one being that if Joe is even considering this as an option, he should be getting his name out there again in full force. Kamenetz definitely did him dirty in this last race and everyone knows it. The nice guys finish last rule applied here on more than one level and if he really wants this, he needs to let it be known now!
I also agree with you about what you said to RA. If you don't have anything intelligent to say, just don't say anything at all. It just makes you look...well, unintelligent. The poor usage and/or lack of punctuaction and grammar doesn't help to make your case, either. Why put the word "farmer" in quotes when speaking about a man that is quite obviously a farmer? (along with the last 5 generations of his family) Not the best comeback you could have come up with...and since you already said the word "pretending" in the sentence, the usage of the quotation marks was especially redundant. Ugh.

Bart, you claim to visit the area quite often and you don't know? You are starting to sound like Armstrong. You might want to check on your favorite haunt for damage.

Take you pick, the Sun --- hardly a word on the flood -- or Dundalk Patch, you know the site you comment on.

Robert, you are on the wrong page. If you want to talk about rain go to Dundalk Patch, the one you left a comment on.

I can't believe one can have that much trouble comprehending simple issues.

What about your new story that you belong to a country club? What club is it, or is this one of those figments of your imagination like everything else?

I had to remind Bart where he was, because he seemed to forget.

His quote: "John? John who? Flood victims? What flood victims?".

Another lapse in memory: "I claim to visit what area? I don't often read the Dundalk Patch, it's not my neighborhood.".

It's in Dundalk not far from the Sea Horse. Take a look at the additional photos posted on the floods in Dundalk. Just look at the photos and they tell the story.

The sad part is this is a recurring problem and has been so for the last 15 years.

I would also read the followup by the community president Mr. Ayres.

Joe Bartenfelder is one of the most honest people I have ever had the pleasure to campaign for. If he does not run for office it will be a tremendous loss for the people
of Md. To find an honest politician today is rare.

From what I can tell, Peter Franchot's just about the only Democrat in Annapolis who holds his own party's feet to the fire on taxes and spending. I think he's an honest guy who's trying to do right by the taxpayers, and I like that he's spending time with "common sense" people like Joe Bartenfelder. He'll have my vote in 2014.
