McDonough calls Jacobs A 'Puppet' Candidate

Republican State Sen. Nancy Jacobs is expected to announce her candidacy for congress in Essex this morning but one Baltimore County delegate is less than impressed.

In fact, Del. Pat McDonough said he and some other Republicans won't likely vote for the four-term senator from Harford County. He also had a few choice words for another Republican, Rep. Andy Harris, who the delegate said is responsible for getting Jacobs to run and splitting Republican voters.

"We won't be supporting her," McDonough said on Wednesday. "We're waiting for another candidate."

Jacobs is expected to announce at 11 a.m. that she will seek the Republican nomination to challenge incumbent Democrat Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger in November.

McDonough did not elaborate on who else was not supporting Jacobs or who the identity of the candidate he believed would be announcing later.

McDonough said his primary problem with Jacobs is her support of a bill that grants in-state tuition to illegal immigrants during Gov. Robert Ehrlich's term in office.

Ehrlich ultimately vetoed the bill. Jacobs voted against the bill last year.

McDonough calls that waffling.

"We  don't know if she goes to Washington which Nancy Jacobs will actually be in Congress," said McDonough, adding that there were other issues dividing him from Jacobs. He declined to immediately elaborate.

Not that McDonough thinks she can win. The delegate said Jacobs, in her state senate district,  currently represents 11 percent of Ruppersberger's congressional district.

"The part of the district she represents she loses—I don't see that she has any base," said McDonough.

McDonough criticized Rep. Andy Harris, a freshman Republican, for lining up Jacobs to run.

"She's a puppet for Harris," McDonough said. "She wasn't even talking about running until he talked to her."

Larry Smith, a Timonium resident and member of Harris' congressional staff, is also running for the Republican nomination in the district Ruppersberger represents.

Contested primaries split Republican votes, said McDonough.

"(Harris) should pay attention to his own district," said McDonough.

Kathy Szeliga, a Republican delegate who represents the same district as McDonough and is Harris' campaign manager, said Harris "is no puppet master."

"Nancy Jacobs is a strong, independent Republican woman who makes her own decisions," said Szeliga.

Jacobs did meet with Harris as part of her exploratory process but Harris did not push her to run, said Szeliga.

"Andy is not out seeking candidates," she said.

Szeliga said she will personally endorse Jacobs once the senator formally announces her candidacy.

"She's tough on crime, she led the charge on Jessica's law, she's worked on gang issues and she was the first woman to become minority leader," Szeliga said.

As for Smith, Szeliga said "he's a great guy but he doesn't have the campaign or legislative experience Nancy Jacobs does—it isn't personal about Larry Smith."

Szeliga said Harris will likely "have a conversation" with Smith about his campaign but declined to say what that conversation might entail.

"Andy's not going to be someone who's putting candidates in or out," she said.

McDonough, Jacobs and Harris are cut of the same political cloth: They find no room for middle ground, and this is EXACTLY what is wrong with politics both in Maryland and across the nation. The state of our Union is *not* built on black and white issues but rather grey area's. Not one of them are capable of helping middle America/the middle class because they can't see past their own grandiose ego's. All three need to go for our state to thrive both fiscally and socially.

Suffice it to say, there are 2 votes in my household. We can promise that none of these three "politicians" will ever receive a single vote for any office from either of us. Maryland can do better.

Amdactivist - Every reason you just listed and claimed should be WHY we get rid of Dutch is WHY I will vote for him. As a (Gnostic) Christian, I believe that we take care EVERYONE, regardless of class or national origin. That means I firmly believe in universal health care. It means that we are taking care of everyone - "the least of these." Why is that wrong again? Oh yeah - because we don't want to take responsibility for mankind... just our own pocket books. That just doesn't make my soul feel real good.

Why is it idiotic to believe we should be nice to Muslims? When you are kind to people, they are kind to you - it's a no brainer. If you are trying to say that all Muslims are terrorists that doesn't make Dutch the idiot... it means you need to look in the mirror. I know quite a few Muslims and I know a lot about the Islamic faith. They are peaceful and kind. Islam is no more evil than Christianity. Let us be mindful of "christian" crusades, slaughtering indians in the name of Jesus, bombing abortion clinics, and those wonderful "christians" from Kansas who are so good at emotional terrorism. So, before you try and elude to Muslims bing "evil" let's get the log out of your own eye and that of the church.

As for the "dream act" and immigrants; Lev 19:34: "You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.

Tom the problem with people like you is, you only do things because they make you fell better about yourself. You never look at the results of your voting. You think your doing good by supporting universal health care because it makes you feel good about you, but the facts are universal health care is good for no one because it can not be maintained and sooner rather than later no one will have health care.

Why don't you think with your head for a change and do something because it's the smart thing to do and not because it makes you feel better about yourself?

Rob, that is the most moronic post on this entire thread. My concern is about human beings. You are most like Pro-Life as well, but you don't want to take care of the lives that are here now.

I don't care about how it makes me "feel" emotionally, cupcake. I care about what it does to my soul. Try it some time.

all i know is that Dutch and Obama are like 2 thorns between the next rose. He has got to go. He voted for dream act which will cost md taxpayers Millions$ and is a friend of the muslim brotherhood that has 26k terrorist groups associated with them. He became washingtonized over night and his strings being pulled. I will vote for the one that is tough on illegals and not afraid to speak out. I will not vote for someone that is a hush hush politicians regarding illegal aliens. *criminals* who steal our $$, jobs and vote. They are allowed to work any dang place they want in md and most politicians cater to the employers who hire them.. Why? Campaign support. Employers pay well on the table and under.. How many people you know out of work while you see illegals working everywhere. Isn't $2billion a year Md tax $$ enough for them because of welfare, incarcerations, schooling, jobs etc?

Thats why omalley raising all permits, fines, fees, gas, tolls etc. to support his new americans. Nancy done some nice things while she was in office 17 years * i think* but like i said weak on immigration. I'd vote for her if she's all we have against the sellout washintonian Dutch.. Tom, at one time I also fell into the trap as a 30 year plus democrat. I now research every single person I plan on voting for. Dutch's record is obnoxious. I am also an immigrant family coming to ellis island. this is not about supporting and helping immigrants. Its about these illegals who insist on staying undocumented because politicians like Dutch, omalley viva la mikulski cater to them with our tax $$.. Now we pay in excess of $2billion a year in md to illegals who cross our borders and have babies for profits.. We pay for their children. Every single one of them with welfare and its freebies they are allowed to get using fake/stolen ids. A legit id act was voted down in this state by most of the democrat liberals. It would of insisted that illegals Or 'undocumented" to make it sound a bit softer for you, would have to provide a legit id, birth cert, social security # etc before they got benefits, drivers license, jobs , food stamps etc. Whats wrong with that?

I stand by my statement, no matter how much you want to say things like "trap" and "liberal" (yes, I can imagine you spitting the words out) and throw dollar signs around. Hey, I have an idea siince it's all about money for you. How about if the churches give up their tax exempt status and help the illegal immigrants become citizens, since it is VERY expensive to do so? Then all these "christian republicans" wouldn't have a way of covering up their bigotry and would be way too exposed.

Lev 19:34: "You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God."

Mark 8:36. "For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?"

At some point we need to stop being so centered on a green piece of paper and start worrying about real people.. living breathing individuals. Got greed? Get God.

Tom, you are not a good christian if you believe that what I say is bigot.. I too read the bible and its very easy to pick and choose. Like i said, its not about immigrants its about illegal criminals.. The green paper what you elect to call money is so very important when you've lost your home and no money to feed your children because of illegal aliens. More then 1 million homes lost ever year for the past few years .. The illegal criminals *not immigrants* are coming to the land of the free and truly stealing our $$, jobs.. They come across border with gangs, weapons and disease. If the catholic church wants to make them all citizens *i'm also a catholic*, then go for it. I know in Md last year we have over 500,000 illegal aliens mostly in montgomery and baltimore city, and only 1000 became a citizen. The criminal aliens don't want to become citizens as its more productive to stay illegal then it is to become a citizen and be forced to use a legit id.. God helps those that help themselves.. Not steal from they neighbor. Remember the 10 commandments Tom? Thou shall not steal? Well they are stealing Tom. Open your eyes and use common sense when voting. You are one example of why our state and country is the way it is.. People moving out of md in groves with good reasons.. So to conclude, I am not a racist or bigot just using common sense and would love to give $$ to my own children's food and clothing then support criminals..Tell Linda I said hello..

Hmmmm. You don't know me. You don't know my background. In 1997 I was rear ended by a drunk driver & my c2 was broken (hangmans break). I ended up with permanent Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy. I was a single dad at the time, with my 1 year old infant living with me. I lost EVERYTHING - my home, my vehicle, my career, my savings - EVERYTHING. I learned that money means *NOTHING*. People do. God sometimes puts you on your back to make you look up. So do not surmise that I have no life experience & no sense of monetary "loss."

You may call them illegal & thieves. God calls them "His creation" - He did not draw lines on the planet. Man did. So you read your Bible & keep up the anger and spew the hatred like McDonough & Harris & Jacobs. They are wolves in sheeps clothing. As for me, I will read my Bible & praise my God through helping His creation. (con't)

You have forgotten (or perhaps never knew) your purpose on this earth. When you learn to take away the Almighty Dollar (our "false idol") & you learn to serve people, you become a better person. I am not superior to you, and I will not profess to be. I have my own bigotry. However, I choose to work & think past it. That is what makes us different.

As for being an example... Good. I prefer to be an example of what God has called us to do AND be - not a bigot who lives for a piece of green paper.

Unfortunately for us republicans are arguments are null and void, because here in Maryland we don't have a chance of ever having enough of a majority to change anything for the good. Maryland is now, has almost always been and will forever be ran by liberal democrats. Nothing good has happen for Maryland citizens in decades, everything is getting worse and will continue to do so. The only republican vote that will ever count in the state of Maryland is the one you make with your feet and mine is coming closer and closer. No, Rob. You need to reread the Constitution.
God is not in the constitution. Also there is the rule within that: " but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States."
The founders of this country did not want a belief or non-belief in God to be a factor in their new government.

hey rob "wall of separation between church and state," as written in Thomas Jefferson's letter to the Danbury Baptist Association in 1802. The original text reads: "... I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between Church & State." Jefferson reflected his frequent speaking theme that the government is not to interfere with religion. also I never said anything about god I said a book like im sure you would not want people to vote a certain way because they read a watchtower book " Jehovah witness" or a someone else that read a comic strip .. also you might hink you live the law of god .. and im sure it makes you fell better at bedtime, but trust me when it comes down to it YOU DO live by the law of man. there would be alot of murders if you just lived the law of god. he doest put you in the pokey. also for some reason I cant correct my typos just so the grammer nazis out there i did try lol

I got my documents mixed up, The Declaration of Independence states that we are all endowed by our creator (God).

Separation of Church and State does not mean that Government is free of God. Most Presidents invoke their belief in God and how they look to him to make the right decisions. Go read George Washington farewell speech and tell me where there's no reference to God and his influence in the shaping of America including her government.

@ rob One common misuse of the Declaration of Independence is to argue that it states that our rights come from God and, therefore, there are no legitimate interpretations of the rights in the Constitution that would be contrary to God. The first problem is that the Declaration of Independence refers to a “Creator” and not the Christian “God” meant by people making the argument. The second problem is that the “rights” mentioned in the Declaration of Independence are “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” — none of which are “rights” discussed in the Constitution.
Finally, the Declaration of Independence also makes it clear that governments created by humanity derive their powers from the consent of the governed, not from any gods. This is why the Constitution does not make any mention of any gods. There is no reason to think that there is anything illegitimate about an interpretation of any of the rights outlined in the Constitution merely because it runs contrary to what some people think that their conception of a god would want.
What this all means is that arguments against the separation of church and state which rely upon the language of the Declaration of Independence fail. First, the document in question has no legal authority with which one could make a legal case. Second, the sentiments expressed therein do not support the principle that government should be guided either by any specific religion (like Christianity)

The Declaration of Independence was a more "passionate" document; the colonies were breaking away from England, their master. Thus, the more passionate "creator" mention.
The constitution was the LAW. More formal and deliberate. Thus, no mention of "creator". This document would have to last, absent the passion, and included the rule that there would be no religion test. A clear separation of church and state by its very omission.
