McDonough calls Jacobs A 'Puppet' Candidate

State senator announces her run for congress at a Thursday morning event but McDonough says some Republicans won't support her.

Republican State Sen. Nancy Jacobs is expected to announce her candidacy for congress in Essex this morning but one Baltimore County delegate is less than impressed.

In fact, Del. Pat McDonough said he and some other Republicans won't likely vote for the four-term senator from Harford County. He also had a few choice words for another Republican, Rep. Andy Harris, who the delegate said is responsible for getting Jacobs to run and splitting Republican voters.

"We won't be supporting her," McDonough said on Wednesday. "We're waiting for another candidate."

Jacobs is that she will seek the Republican nomination to challenge incumbent Democrat Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger in November.

McDonough did not elaborate on who else was not supporting Jacobs or who the identity of the candidate he believed would be announcing later.

McDonough said his primary problem with Jacobs is her support of a bill that grants in-state tuition to illegal immigrants during Gov. Robert Ehrlich's term in office.

Ehrlich ultimately vetoed the bill. Jacobs voted against the bill last year.

McDonough calls that waffling.

"We  don't know if she goes to Washington which Nancy Jacobs will actually be in Congress," said McDonough, adding that there were other issues dividing him from Jacobs. He declined to immediately elaborate.

Not that McDonough thinks she can win. The delegate said Jacobs, in her state senate district,  currently represents 11 percent of Ruppersberger's congressional district.

"The part of the district she represents she loses—I don't see that she has any base," said McDonough.

McDonough criticized Rep. Andy Harris, a freshman Republican, for lining up Jacobs to run.

"She's a puppet for Harris," McDonough said. "She wasn't even talking about running until he talked to her."

Larry Smith, a Timonium resident and member of Harris' congressional staff, is also running for the Republican nomination in the district Ruppersberger represents.

Contested primaries split Republican votes, said McDonough.

"(Harris) should pay attention to his own district," said McDonough.

Kathy Szeliga, a Republican delegate who represents the same district as McDonough and is Harris' campaign manager, said Harris "is no puppet master."

"Nancy Jacobs is a strong, independent Republican woman who makes her own decisions," said Szeliga.

Jacobs did meet with Harris as part of her exploratory process but Harris did not push her to run, said Szeliga.

"Andy is not out seeking candidates," she said.

Szeliga said she will personally endorse Jacobs once the senator formally announces her candidacy.

"She's tough on crime, she led the charge on Jessica's law, she's worked on gang issues and she was the first woman to become minority leader," Szeliga said.

As for Smith, Szeliga said "he's a great guy but he doesn't have the campaign or legislative experience Nancy Jacobs does—it isn't personal about Larry Smith."

Szeliga said Harris will likely "have a conversation" with Smith about his campaign but declined to say what that conversation might entail.

"Andy's not going to be someone who's putting candidates in or out," she said.

Dkenny - I can make VERY sound decisions based on my moral compass, which is dictated by my spiritual beliefs. Every moment of my life is dictated by my spirituality - from raising my children to how I serve my community. My vote is also driven the saem way. Do not spend a single moment supposing that I should also vote that way.
Tom Barnes January 8, 2012 at 02:19 am
I call them human beings. I call them God's children. You can call them what you want. But when you stand before God - and you WILL stand before God, you sort it out with him. Not worth my time or breath to argue with you Amd. I am set in my ways and your bigotry does nothing to sway me away from my own moral compass.
Tom Barnes January 8, 2012 at 02:21 am
Rob, that is the most moronic post on this entire thread. My concern is about human beings. You are most like Pro-Life as well, but you don't want to take care of the lives that are here now.
I don't care about how it makes me "feel" emotionally, cupcake. I care about what it does to my soul. Try it some time.

tom. you don't have the right or knowledge to call people bigots especially when you admit to being one. I call it illegal criminals as they should be called. They are stealing. What part of that don't you understand. same as if i stole your money.. God helps those that help themselves. You surely aren't a good christian if you believe stealing is ok..

DKennylee: You need to go back and re-read the constitution because it's founded on the belief in God. As for me I live by the law of God first all these other laws are laws only when you get caught breaking them. But in all situations commonsense should rule your life. Here's a something to live your life by - "If you don't believe in God you'll believe in anything."
Bart January 8, 2012 at 03:40 am
No, Rob. You need to reread the Constitution.
God is not in the constitution. Also there is the rule within that: " but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States." The founders of this country did not want a belief or non-belief in God to be a factor in their new government.

hey rob "wall of separation between church and state," as written in Thomas Jefferson's letter to the Danbury Baptist Association in 1802. The original text reads: "... I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between Church & State." Jefferson reflected his frequent speaking theme that the government is not to interfere with religion. also I never said anything about god I said a book like im sure you would not want people to vote a certain way because they read a watchtower book " Jehovah witness" or a someone else that read a comic strip .. also you might hink you live the law of god .. and im sure it makes you fell better at bedtime, but trust me when it comes down to it YOU DO live by the law of man. there would be alot of murders if you just lived the law of god. he doest put you in the pokey. also for some reason I cant correct my typos just so the grammer nazis out there i did try lol

I'm sure your dicisions you make for your own life is good for you. But when your spirituality affected vote affects me there is a problem. Also if you lived buy all the verse's in the bible I'm sure you would have trouble with the law of the land again Im sure you make good choices for you and your kids ..but it seems people like to quote just the parts of the bible that works or them and not in the whole text or meaning .

I got my documents mixed up, The Declaration of Independence states that we are all endowed by our creator (God).
Separation of Church and State does not mean that Government is free of God. Most Presidents invoke their belief in God and how they look to him to make the right decisions. Go read George Washington farewell speech and tell me where there's no reference to God and his influence in the shaping of America including her government.
Rob January 8, 2012 at 06:06 pm
I forgot to mention that I stated that man's laws are only laws when you get caught breaking them. I don't murder for fear of jail, I don't do it for the fear of God.
Dkennylee January 8, 2012 at 06:58 pm
@ rob One common misuse of the Declaration of Independence is to argue that it states that our rights come from God and, therefore, there are no legitimate interpretations of the rights in the Constitution that would be contrary to God. The first problem is that the Declaration of Independence refers to a “Creator” and not the Christian “God” meant by people making the argument. The second problem is that the “rights” mentioned in the Declaration of Independence are “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” — none of which are “rights” discussed in the Constitution.
Finally, the Declaration of Independence also makes it clear that governments created by humanity derive their powers from the consent of the governed, not from any gods. This is why the Constitution does not make any mention of any gods. There is no reason to think that there is anything illegitimate about an interpretation of any of the rights outlined in the Constitution merely because it runs contrary to what some people think that their conception of a god would want. What this all means is that arguments against the separation of church and state which rely upon the language of the Declaration of Independence fail. First, the document in question has no legal authority with which one could make a legal case. Second, the sentiments expressed therein do not support the principle that government should be guided either by any specific religion (like Christianity)

@ rob also i read that letter and it was alot of reading and i fail to see anyyhing about god could ya send me a line out of it ? also it would be a big no no for a president to say he doesnt believe in god ...as with all the presidents. with some of the things they have to and do would go against there god..... how hard would it be to say yes to war ...i believe they say what they need to
Tom Barnes January 8, 2012 at 07:11 pm
Had to chuckle, Rob. Love the line "I don't murder for fear of jail, I don't do it for the fear of God." So true!
Dkennylee January 8, 2012 at 07:11 pm
oops no spell check sorry above
Josephine Hlatki January 8, 2012 at 09:25 pm
Has anyone noticed yet just how far off the original topic you've gotten? It's ridiculous.
Bart January 9, 2012 at 01:26 am
The Declaration of Independence was a more "passionate" document; the colonies were breaking away from England, their master. Thus, the more passionate "creator" mention.
The constitution was the LAW. More formal and deliberate. Thus, no mention of "creator". This document would have to last, absent the passion, and included the rule that there would be no religion test. A clear separation of church and state by its very omission.

Scott, No I don't.
Paul Amirault January 18, 2012 at 12:39 pm
Good morning DK, although I believe that many Presidents in the past and maybe present were/are atheists they cannot say so. An atheist/humanist cannot be elected in this country or any other.
Paul Amirault January 18, 2012 at 12:44 pm
DK, your analysis of the Constitution and Dec of Ind is well thought and very deep. I am afraid many will not agree with you. I commend you on your well thought out analysis.

Hey paul thanks I like some history now:)

George Helm February 13, 2012 at 04:42 pm
It's amazing to me that anyone would think they are being represented by politicians that vote straight party lines. Remember people, this is Maryland and no republican is going to beat, "Mr. Eminent Domain", Dutch Ruppersburger or, "The Meanest Woman in Congress", Babs Mikulski! Reading the comments is absolutely hilarious!

George we still have to try by voting.. We can't give up right?
