Pollster: Majority of Maryland Voters Support DREAM Act

Democratic polling firm claims that a majority of likely voters will vote in favor of the referendum question in November.

A majority of Maryland Voters support a ballot question that would grant in-state tuition to some illegal immigrants in Maryland, according to a Democratic pollster.

A two-page memo by Washington DC-based political consultants Garin Hart Yang Research Group says the firm's polling shows that 60 percent of likely Maryland voters favor the issue known as Question 4.

Opposition to the ballot question remained stable at 26 percent compared to the last polling on the issue done by the same firm in March. Undecided voters accounted for the shift, according to the Garin Hart Yang memo.

"Question 4 enjoys strong support throughout the Maryland electorate, garnering close to three-fifths of the vote among white voters and three-fourths among African Americans. In fact, support for Question 4 is so broad that even one-third of [Mitt] Romney voters are in favor," pollster's memo states.

The memo was posted on the Educating Maryland's Kids website, a group advocating for the passage of the referendum question.

The questions were not made public. The poll queried 503 likely Maryland voters between Sept. 14 and 16 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percent.

The same pollster issued a memo in August citing overwhelming support for the same-sex marriage referendum question.

Garin Hart Yang Research works for a number of Democratic clients around the country including Gov. Martin O'Malley, Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Howard County Executive Ken Ulman and former Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith.

I will just be happy to have a vote on the matter. Regarding the Native Americans, the vast majority of those who died were killed by disease.
Buck Harmon September 27, 2012 at 01:06 PM
There is no documentation that accurately proves how they were killed. They were killed by our government at the time....our government led the charge, and that is accurately documented fact. To deny it would be living as many are in denial.

As long as you make up your own truth, it will remain (in your head).
Phil Dirt September 27, 2012 at 01:39 PM
If a head of lettuce costs $10 without illegals picking it, then the cost of a head of lettuce should be $10. That's the way the market is supposed to work.

North Carolina is ranked #9 and MD is ranked 10th. Not a whole lot of difference between the undocumented immigrant population. The whole we are becoming Greece canard is patently false. It's a Glen Beck talking point. Most of the time they try to compare California and Greece but that dog don't hunt either. http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2012/08/5-graphs-that-show-how-crazy-it-is-to-compare-california-to-greece/260939/

North Carolina 's Poultry industry is much larger than Maryland's. That's labor intensive.

I hope no one here is making a connection between illegal immigrants and genocide. Wow, what a stretch.
hawkeye September 27, 2012 at 02:26 PM
TheresaR - aren't you glad you finally figured out the dynamics here? There's no sense in talking sense because all you do is open the door to the attack dogs.
Buck Harmon September 27, 2012 at 02:34 PM
From the eyes and minds of the Native Americans...we all were the illegal immigrants...no stretch to this truth...unless you're in denial of it...
Steve September 27, 2012 at 02:46 PM
It's not that big of a stretch. The groups such as FAIR, CIS, NumbersUSA etc which are pushing anti immigration policies such as the Md DREAM Act are also strong proponents of Eugenics and abortion. They try and claim it's all about "illegals" but it's really not, it's about anti "ANY" immigration and keeping the White race pure. Here is a good read on it... http://saynsumthn.wordpress.com/2010/08/20/anti-immigration-leader-responsible-for-americas-first-abortion-law/

From the link I posted: "Tanton writes, “Roy Beck and I think we have come up with an idea that can actually move the battle lines on the immigration question in our favor. While we are working on other ideas to move Democrats, this one involves using the recently released census data to show Republican members of Congress, the Administration, and the party’s leadership how massive immigration imperils their political future. The goal is to change Republicans’ perception of immigration so that when they encounter the word “immigrant,” their reaction is “Democrat.” …Our plan is to hire a lobbyist who will carry the following message to Republicans on Capitol Hill and to business leaders: Continued massive immigration will soon cost you political control of the White House and Congress.”

There is currently a blog on the Westminster Patch about a Carroll County Commissioner...Haven Shoemaker creating an ordinance that would make English the "official" language in Carroll. What a joke this boob is...

When the Dream Act is defeated, the Democrats will go ahead and do it anyway through other means.
Just a guy September 27, 2012 at 04:40 PM
Ok, Bill, which part of the immigration thing are you really mad at? The fact we couldn't keep them out? We can't send them back? They really do WANT to be here? They send money home? they don't look or sound like you? They usually vote Democratic, since the Republicans usually come off as racist to them... Why not try to make a useable solution to a completely failed and broken system. If your job is threatened by an under edcuated undocumented person, you actually have bigger problems...lol
Just a guy September 27, 2012 at 04:51 PM
Dang, forget to proof read and spell check... sorry about that.
Bill Hussein O'Stalin September 27, 2012 at 06:03 PM
Why not let all the convicted felons out of prison and give them in state tuition also? Same difference.
jag September 27, 2012 at 06:28 PM
Except illegal immigration is a civil offense and of course convicted felons have the right to in-state rates (for the state they're a resident of) following their release, so this is basically the worst analogy you could have possibly come up with.

"Meaning, a person or their family could have been here for decades without filing taxes and only now must file back taxes to qualify." http://mlis.state.md.us/2011rs/billfile/SB0167.htm says: "PROVIDES TO THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE DOCUMENTATION THAT THE INDIVIDUAL OR THE INDIVIDUAL’S PARENT OR LEGAL GUARDIAN HAS FILED A MARYLAND INCOME TAX RETURN: ANNUALLY FOR THE 3 YEARS WHILE THE INDIVIDUAL ATTENDED A PUBLIC OR NONPUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOL IN THE STATE IN ACCORDANCE WITH ITEM (1) OF THIS SUBSECTION; ANNUALLY DURING THE PERIOD, IF ANY, BETWEEN GRADUATION FROM A PUBLIC OR NONPUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOL IN THE STATE AND REGISTRATION AT A COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN THE STATE; AND ANNUALLY DURING THE PERIOD OF ATTENDANCE AT THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE" "REGISTERS IN A COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN THE STATE NOT LATER THAN 4 YEARS AFTER GRADUATING FROM A PUBLIC OR NONPUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOL IN THE STATE OR RECEIVING THE EQUIVALENT OF A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA IN THE STATE." "REGISTERS AT A PUBLIC SENIOR HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTION IN THE STATE NOT LATER THAN 4 YEARS AFTER GRADUATING FROM OR ACHIEVING 60 CREDITS AT A COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN THE STATE."
Corbin Dallas Multipass September 27, 2012 at 06:52 PM
So you graduate from high school and wait 4 years to go to community college. You then spend 2 years in community college to graduate/achieve 60 credits, then you wait another 4 years to apply to state college. That is the longest possible time period you could stretch it out to. That's 4 + 2 + 4 = 10. Now, the parents are on the hook for the 3 years during high school, plus the 4 years between high school and community college, and the 2 years in community college. That's 3 + 4 + 2 = 9 years of tax filings. The typical path would be 3 + 2 = 5 years of tax filings, though maybe shorter in the case of extremely bright kids who go to community college while in secondary school I'd guess. I get that you could possibly sit around, have your kid wait around file 9 years of back taxes at the last minute just to get your kid a student rate but what do you actually think the likelihood of that being done as a widespread practice is.
Bill Hussein O'Stalin September 27, 2012 at 07:10 PM
It's a criminal offense.
Just a guy September 27, 2012 at 07:15 PM
It's civil Bill...
Joe September 27, 2012 at 07:33 PM
Civil offense IF being here is their only offense which is rarely the case. More often than not they have forged or stolen identities and uses false documents. THOSE are felonies. And don;t beLIEve the Obama deportation numbers. They are fake and Obama has even said so. They count all those who have been caught AT the border and returned to the other side. If they return and are caught agian they are counted again. then again and again and again since they do not charge them with even the civil crime which would make it a felony to re-enter again. "Chairman Smith: “Internal Department of Homeland Security documents obtained by the House Judiciary Committee reveal that President Obama and other administration officials have falsified their record to achieve their so-called historic deportation numbers. Administration officials claim that Immigration and Customs Enforcement has deported a record number of illegal immigrants but the facts show that they have fabricated their deportation statistics by illegitimately adding over 100,000 removals to their deportation figures for the past two years."
Joe September 27, 2012 at 07:33 PM
"“Since 2011, the Obama administration has included numbers from a Border Patrol program that returns illegal immigrants to Mexico right after they cross the Southwest border in their year-end deportation statistics. It is dishonest to count illegal immigrants apprehended by the Border Patrol along the border as ICE removals. And these ‘removals’ from the Border Patrol program do not subject the illegal immigrant to any penalties or bars for returning to the U.S. This means a single illegal immigrant can show up at the border and be removed numerous times in a single year – and counted each time as a removal. When the numbers from this Border Patrol program are removed from this year’s deportation data, it shows that removals are actually down nearly 20% from 2009. Another 40,000 removals are also included in the final deportation count but it is unclear where these removals came from. “In a campaign season when Administration officials have made a habit of spinning their numbers to ignore their real record, it’s no surprise that they are doing the same to their immigration record. It seems like President Obama is trying to trick the American people into thinking he is enforcing our immigration laws. But no amount of spin can cover up the facts. It’s bad enough that the President has neglected to enforce our immigration laws but it’s even worse that his Administration would distort statistics to deceive the American people.”
Christopher Kidwell October 01, 2012 at 03:04 PM
Guys, it's time to stop blaming these people for coming to America to get a better life. There is no difference, save by the stupid ass laws, between an illegal immigrant and a legal one in the real world. NONE! Wake the hell up and get off your hatred of non-white people, because speaking as a white born American.... that is what I have to say this is.
Joe October 01, 2012 at 03:34 PM
Christopher, does a nation not have the right and obligation to know who is in our country? Is the medical and criminal screening of legal aliens done for a reason and why should those who broke into our country get a pass for those checks?
CB9678 October 01, 2012 at 03:43 PM
Just a bill legal immagrint children already get instate tution because they are residents of Maryland! An illegal immigrant is not a resident of the state. Secondly do you have a problem with the less restrictive laws that have existed in Texas, Kansas and Nebraska for about 10 years?
