Perry Hall Royal Farms Opens Without Fanfare

The convenience store and gas station quietly opened Friday morning.

Chicken, coffee and gasoline at $3.19 a gallon—a new Royal Farms quietly opened in Perry Hall on Friday. The 5,000-square-foot store at 9620 Belair Rd. joins a long list of convenience stores, gas stations and mini-grocers in the U.S. Route 1 corridor.

Mike Yates, a Kingsville resident, said he was pleasantly surprised to see its doors open in the afternoon. "I get a cup of coffee from Royal Farms everyday driving to work in Timonium. Now I can stop in Perry Hall," he said.

Yates said the store looks much better than the old BP station, and he hopes the competition will further drive down gas prices at the Safeway gas station across Belair Road.

"I'm wondering what will happen to the 7-Eleven across the street. Royal Farms has everything they do, but without the gas," Yates added.

For Kent Farmer, store manager at the Walgreens adjacent to Safeway, the new competition wasn't necessarily welcome.

"I can't say I'm happy about it, but what are you going to do? I just walked over to check out their prices," Farmer said.

"I don't think the community really needed another gas station," he added.

The Royal Farms store manager declined to comment on the opening.

When another Royal Farms opened along the Maryland Route 43 extension in March, the opening attracted public officials and Royal Farms executives presented donations to volunteer organizations.

A worker said a similar grand opening celebration will likely be scheduled after the holidays, sometime in January.

Do you plan on shopping at the new Perry Hall Royal Farms? Tell us in the comments.

Oh, seriously, you're explaining the meaning of a convenience store to me? The question above asked "do you plan on shopping at the new Royal Farms?" My answer was no, and I explained that I have no use for these kinds of stores. I don't find them convenient in the least bit. I find being a little organized is much more convenient. Gassing up the cars while running errands on days off, and having hot coffee waiting in the coffee maker first thing in the morning, is much more convenient to me than running around early in the morning, like a chicken with my head cut off, trying to get things done during a commute to work. But, as I also said, apparently these stores are thriving, so to each his own.

Well Grace, I commend you for living the perfect life. Some of us are not as lucky and sometimes things don't always go as planned. Therefore, we need such convenience stores. Seriously.

It is useless to try and explain the need for a store that is useless to someone who doesn't see the need. It's just another "chain store ruining the loo and feel of a small town of Perry Hall". I personally find it a great addition to our little town. I've lived in this town since I was born. I've seen shops come and go. It's time for this cahnge. Is it an good location? Maybe not, but it is need. I had mentioned the idea of a Wawa near the corner of Belair and Honygo about a year and a half ago. So if a person doesn't plan on patronizing the store then just say "no" and keep you opinion to yourself.

Grace - I agree with you. Expect smarmy, mocking comments from people who are unorganized or disagree. I like how citizens in this area make fun of others because you plan ahead. You never said you were perfect. That is how you are perceived because you fill up your tank in advance or make coffee in the morning???

LOVE that Royal Farm is right around the corner. I know there are lots of gas stations on Bel Air road but most are on the opposite side of the road. In rush hour traffic, it's not much fun trying to make a left across traffic. Plus there's a light at royal farm :) so you can go either direction easily!!!! And I agree with everyone who said their chicken is yummy- another plus!!!!!
