A high-profile national clothing chain is making an entrance into Towson later this year.
KLNB Retail announced Wednesday it has finalized a lease with Urban Outfitters for the currently-vacant building at 424 York Road, once the home of outdoor store Hudson Trail Outfitters.
The new store should be open in the 10,000-square foot space in time for the holiday shopping season.
The many nearby shops in Towson Town Center served as a selling point, said Ryan Wilner, a broker for KLNB Retail.
"We were trying to find upscale, energetic retailers that were looking for a combination of well-educated, high-income consumers, the ones that take advantage that strong daytime demographics that do better within downtown Towson," he said.
Another selling point for Urban Outfitters was the high student population in the area. Towson University, Goucher College and Towson High School are all within walking distance of downtown Towson.
"This is fantastic news," said County Councilman David Marks. "This is right in the heart of Towson."
Urban Outfitters was founded in 1970 and operates more than 170 stores worldwide. Its only other Maryland location is in the Light Street Pavilion in Baltimore's Inner Harbor.
Shane Gullivan, owner of Towson vintage clothing shop , said he was "stoked" about his new neighbors.
"First of all, getting any retail business in Towson is tough," he said. "That's a nice size building ... It'll be a nice draw to bring some strong business."
