Visions for Vacancies: Everybody Went to Gino's

The Towson building best known as the former hamburger hangout sits vacant in downtown Towson.

For this week's Visions for Vacancies, we look at the old Gino's on York Road in Towson.

Readers of a certain age may remember when the restaurant was "the place to go," as the jingle said, but now? Let's just say the old place has seen better days.

Gino's made a comeback to the Baltimore area last year, opening its mere blocks away on .

So you tell us: What would you put on this lot?

I suspect that that lot is not very attractive to anyone unless and until the portion of Joppa Road that runs behind the Catholic Corner and other Allegheny shops is cleaned up, physically and visually. For lack of better words, that stretch of road from the circle to Washington looks like a dump. The Gino's lot is a nice piece of property with possible entry/exit from 2 sides. Ideally, it would become an establishment that caters to non-drinking age customers so they had a place to congregate after-hours.

I remember this old site as a Roy Rogers until it closed (this was the late 1980s). Was it a Gino's before that?

That's what people had told me back when we were trying to figure out where the new Towson restaurant was... Maybe it was a Gino's before...? Can someone chime in?

It was a Gino's first, and then a Roy Rogers.

Ah, thanks for clearing it up.

The gateway roads to Towson are an ugly mess and this corner takes the cake.
If they can fix it at least flatten it and start from a clean slate.

According to an old book on Towson which I have, the present blacktop of the original Gino's used to be the lawn to the home of Solomon Schmuck, the brother-in-law of William Towson. The Schmuck home was made of stone and dated back to 1787. In 1977, that structure was the Valley Gun Shop. I am not sure whether the present dress shop which remains is a portion of the original Schmuck home or not.
