Del. Heather Mizeur, who is running to become first woman and openly gay person elected Maryland’s governor, received some national attention on Wednesday when she appeared on MSNBC.

Mizeur discussed her campaign for governor and her proposal to legalize marijuana, and use the funds to pay for pre-kindergarten in Maryland.

"Prohibition has not worked. Our marijuana laws have been enforced with racial bias, they detract our police officers from being able to focus on more serious, and violent crime, and when we tax, legalize and regulate marijuana we'll have the revenue to invest in other important priorities," Mizeur told the network.

Mizeur, of Montgomery County, is currently running for the Democratic nomination against Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown and Attorney General Doug Gansler. According to a Goucher College poll, Mizeur could use the exposure. The poll showed she had the lowest name recognition of any candidate for governor in either party.

Why does the press need to dwell on this single idea? I like all of her ideas. I think she is a refreshing straight shooter that doesn't have to fumble through a play book to speak her mind.
