Phelps Not Planning to Medal in Pre-Olympics Beauty Contest

Check out the Rodgers Forge native's London 2012 headshot.

In his official headshot ahead of the London Olympics, Towson's own Michael Phelps looks like he just spent a few weeks competing on "Survivor."

This scraggly-bearded, bed-headed shot is the picture on his official Olympics profile, which lists his height, weight, Olympics record, hobbies ("playing video games, watching television"), rituals and other trivia.

It will be the clean-shaven Michael Phelps, not the Nick Nolte version, who takes to the pool on Saturday for his first events in London.

As Deadspin noted earlier this month, Phelps has taken worse photos.

Such a fine representative of the U.S.A.

good thing that Olympics is a a competition of athletic ability and not a beauty contest like everything else in America....

Still, one might want to show enough respect for the USA, the Olympics, and himself to look presentable. Like maybe he cares.

seriously Tyler???, you actually wrote and published an article about Michael Phelps not looking as pretty as he should? Really? By whose standards? Yours? societies? How about this Tyler, the guy is a world class swimmer who won 8 gold medals in his respective field, and has amassed 16 olympic medals overall. He's probably a millionaire, and lives his life by his terms. Frankly, i don't think it matters what he looks like. You're Nick Nolte reference is also borderline slanderous, because you're referencing Nick Nolte's mugshots from his drug and alcohol arrests, as it relates to Mr. Phelps picture which you published in your article. Again, i find this article completely classless. I find it in extremely poor taste that you write and publish an article about someones looks, let alone a local guy who could potentially make olympic history. I can't believe Patch let's you write and then publish stuff like this.

maybe this is just how he looks... anyone think of that? in any way, this is not news worthy, at all.

Look at all the other Olympic mug shots before you judge. It looks like they took them with a Polaroid camera right after they got up in the morning.

A clean shaven Michael Phelps will be a stream-lined Phelps. Those half split seconds are going to make all the difference so he can't have all that hair creating the least bit of drag.

Matt, you shouldnt crucify Tyler because of this piece. There are plenty of meaningful articles out there that deserve your attention (not this one). Your tone is really quite malicious, I think we should all be a bit more kind in the way we interact with each other and not blow things out of proportion. Tyler isnt calling Michael Phelps an ugly man he's commenting on his unkempt looks that seems out of place for an Olympic photo, and sure its not news of any substance but guess what...shocker! people write gossip stories about quirky things and would you believe it there are people out there who read these stories (US WEEKLY and PEOPLE magazine)! And sure you could say "well I expect Tyler to hold himself to a higher standard and only write articles concerning world hunger/peace". But did you ever think that Tyler might just be having a little fun or find something curious or humorous? Golly if writing this article makes you of flawed character than I am one wretched human being.

Is this seriously a news story? Looks like Tyler here has a man crush - or maybe his woman does and he's just jealous of him?
