Perry Hall Track & Field Athletes advance to State Championships.

The week started off nicely, both Teams were once again listed in the Baltimore Metro Top 10, Boys at 9 and Girls at 5. Then Tuesday afternoon they were off to the 4A Central Region Championships in Landover. Every single one of them left everything they had at the sports complex. While many did not of place high enough to advance to the States, they did either earn points and/or bested their previous times.

There was plenty of excitement and nail biting moments. Especially during the relays. For me this is gut wrenching. Yes I am the maniac that on the backside of the track while taking photographs is also yelling the individual athletes name to “MOVE”. All the while off to my left in the stands I hear the rest of the team yelling too.  Then you have to wait for the heats to finish and times to be calculated. Sometimes it’s not until half way through the next event when you will hear the placements. The worst wait was our Boys 4x400m Relay, two of the regular runners were unable to run, so after brief scramble for substitutions. Roger Bagley and Patrick Alluisi who just twenty minutes earlier helped the 4x200m Relay team to first place finish stepped up. First out of the blocks was Jahi Thomas who was able to keep up just behind the leaders before handing off to Roger Bagley. Roger found a spark and got just into second handing the baton off to Bart Allen. Bart maintained second handing off to Patrick Alluisi. For two laps Patrick was kept closing within 5 to 3 feet of catching the leader. Out of the final turn I have no idea where he got the burst from but he was oh so close. They ended up second with only .06 separating them from first in their heat.

I know much is written and said about Vincent Ciattei, but he is truly an amazing runner to watch. Vince starts off each race with calm yet deep in concentration look and for most part always behind the leaders. In the 3200 meter run three runners from Severna Park thought they were swift and came out three across blocking Vince behind them. Vince comfortable behind them, on their heels pushing them, wearing them out, biding his time before he makes his pass. Once he inched on by them, it was hard for the competition to stay up with him. When Vince gets to that certain lap his after burners come on and like the energizer bunny just keeps going, lapping other runners with only the finish line in site. Congratulations Vince on placing first in both the 1600m and 3200m.
