Man Displays Handgun in Road Rage Incident

The incident occurred Saturday near the intersection of York and Joppa roads.

A Phoenix man threatened four people, including two children, with a handgun during a Saturday road rage incident, according to Baltimore County police.

At 1:33 p.m., John Emmett, 52, of the 4000 block of Cloverland Drive allegedly pulled out the handgun and pointed it at the victims near the intersection of York and Joppa roads. All parties remained in the seats and vehicles during the incident, according to a Baltimore County police report.

Police later located Emmett's vehicle and positively identified him as the suspect, police said. A handgun was reportedly found under his vehicle's driver seat.

Robert - you're the guy who suggested that the accused here should leave the country for somewhere better, that you don't like the way America treated this maniac - and I suggest you go with him. You think this is a bad country, that this dentist is being persecuted (along with yourself somehow?) - well pal, ain't nobody making you stay... don't let the door hit you in the rear, and take your self-entitled victim-mentality with you. Perhaps you've merely mistaken me for some of the little voices in your head - you think I'm heading up a lynch mob, that I'm some anti-gun conspirator out to help frame dentists! ...all that other nonsense you are going on about? I think the fight you have is with yourself dear, and yet, you're still losing. Here's a video for you to watch... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INscMGmhmX4

Joe - glad to see you joined The Patch today, welcome. Just in time to back up Robert here. Certainly the dentist will get his day in court... the article merely states the facts as reported by the Baltimore County police department - that a family was threatened by a man with a gun, that they identified the man, and that when they pulled him over, they found a gun under his seat. Theoretically, the family could have been trying to kill the dentist, and he merely defensed - but there's no reason to believe that. Theoretically, there may some vast conspiracy to frame the dentist (as "Robert" has suggested), but that seems unlikely. What has been reported is that a man pulled a gun on a family in traffic, and that a man matching that description was found with a gun (there's no mention either way on if he had a valid MD CCW). Certainly, people have a right to defend themselves and to carry a gun. At this point, is there anything at all that leads anyone to believe that this family threatened the dentist to the point that he felt it necessary to draw his gun? I'm sure the details will come out, but to be fair - a family driving in the Towson circle also has a reasonable expectation for their own safety, and everything that the police have reported indicates that they were assaulted with a deadly weapon, while nothing indicates a conspiracy or that this was a dentist defending himself in a gunfight with another motorist. I look forward to reading his statement

Robert, just to be clear I am a white middle aged conservative male in support of the second amendment. But I have to ask, would you be shouting that this guy is innocent until proven guilty if it was a black guy from Baltimore city?
Ed February 23, 2013 at 03:22 AM
I didn't jump to the conclusion. I asked if you would, which you didn't answer. Also, I have seen quite a few stories on patch that show photos of black suspects, and I can't recall seeing anyone insisting that we withhold judgement until after trial. Fair or not, the public usually assumes guilt in these situations. So why would you expect them to treat this particular suspect any different? That's all I'm asking.
Ed February 23, 2013 at 04:03 AM
Robert, I don't disagree with you view of the media in general, but I will say that patch seems to play things pretty straight. Right or wrong, they pretty much report what the police provide. It's the comments sections on most media sites that exposes some of the real hateful messages.
David Taylor February 23, 2013 at 04:43 AM
"I to am guilty of unfair to assumption. But I did not realize how ugly and full of hate people seem to automatically have within that is typical found in those with little education" < I think you might need some help "to" :) http://www.amazon.com/Practical-English-Grammar-Russian-Speakers/dp/B0006EDE62 Happy РККА Day!

That's spelled "Ravens Maniac" , hon.
David Taylor February 23, 2013 at 06:18 AM
Robert (or whoever you are)... When you start making sense, I'll start treating you like you make sense... in the meantime, try taking responsibility for yourself and quit with the moaning and excuses. As long as you're on... what exactly was this... about my, "participation in the mindless, "let's string him up" you were [sic] you were engaged in." I'm happy to respectfully debate you on any point you care to attempt to make, but I can't argue against things you imagine or make up out of thin air. My first and only comment to you on that point was a mention that I think America is a great country, in contrast to your whining and complaining about it, and then I wanted to just mention that I think this idea of some wild anti-gun conspiracy responsible for framing the dentist is just plain nuts... Do you care to explain what you meant by that statement exactly? You call me a lynch-mob and a goober - but what exactly did I say about this dentist that makes it seem to you like I'm calling for his head? I never once mentioned my opinion on gun rights, other than my support, yet you think I'm some "anti-gun" activist or something - you have a lot a voices in your head, don't you, or maybe your "cell phone" was just confused again... Calm down and get a grip.
Gregg Roberts February 23, 2013 at 01:49 PM
I have trouble believing the veracity of this accusation. It might be true but I'd like some proof first. Some asked if we would be so quick to doubt the truth of this incident if it was a black guy from Baltimore City. No, it would be more believable. If it was an African-American doctor from Phoenix, I would be equally less likely to believe the story then if it was a white doctor. Baltimore City is crime-ridden. Unfortunately poverty tends to breed crime. In any event, the justice system will determine who is guilty and who isn't. I don't know the dentist from Adam and like I said maybe he is guilty. I can say that a Black driver of a tow truck blocked the road while he talked on a telephone. I beeped my horn at him. He came a foot from ramming into me do to road rage and not just me but entire family including 1 year old. My white neighbor saw the whole incident and didn't want to have problems with the driver who knew where lived. I didn't call the police, because even though I am white, I don't trust our police at all to protect me or that neighbor. I have called on them before, they have never done their job properly. I find it suspect that they were so quick to arrest this man without any seeming proof. Did the man have a permit to have a gun? Did someone know he carried a gun and had something out for him? Maybe.

If you think we are free in this country your brainwashed with the rest of the lets sit on our laurels crowd who must think its still the 1950's. We were once a great nation, now we are behind in almost every aspect as apposed to the rest of the world. You are only free if your like the majority, otherwise if your not, you end up having your civil rights decided by popular vote. That doesn't seem free to me. What really gets me is how full of hatred so many people are these days and I think the internet has made it more apparent as people can hide behind their computers while they spew their hatred and say things that most would never say if you came across them in public. History is only as honest as those telling it, and I have traveled the world and there are many countries such as the UK and Canada and others that are way more free than we are here in the good ol US of A-. Go to London and see how the US is at least 5 years behind in technology, science and industry. Free? nope, we have had our brains Spammed since childhood to think we are free.
Alan Blatschild February 23, 2013 at 03:09 PM
Us Americans are the laughing stock of the world, and most dont even care enough or are just to ignorant and arrogant to look past our own borders to realize there is a whole nother world our there and lots are more free than we are. America was built by most of the nuttjobs who got kicked out of Europe for their religious fanaticism that they insisted on imposing on others, and like the hypocrites that so many People are about this country, we stole all of it from the Native Americans and basically slaughtered them and put them in cages, what kind of religion is that? and how free is that? Its not unless your one of the "club members" and that's not freedom its hypocrisy. Just because we once had a space program and didn't sell out today at tomorrows expense like we do now doesn't mean we are still this great country, Travel the world and actually see past your own noses then come back to the US and youl see just how arrogant we are, and the rest of the world hates us because we play street corner cop of the world because we are arrogant enough to feel our way is the only way. Sorry, I'M embarrassed to be an American these days. Flame me all you want, it will just prove what I'm saying. Or just wave your guns in the air and force people to believe what you do.
Alan Blatschild February 23, 2013 at 03:09 PM
This country doesn't have anything authentic about it, every street, road, city, city Hall, and cathedral has been built somewhere else in the world first and we just copied it. The facts are there and they don't change just because you say they do or should.
Ed February 23, 2013 at 03:19 PM
Yeah Rob. I think we should just ditch this antiquated judge and jury thing and let readers of on-line websites settle it. Think of how much we would save.
Gas Giant February 23, 2013 at 03:30 PM
Steve, how do you know that this guy has a CCW permit? Is there some list somewhere that we can all visit to look up this information? Or are you just a total a$$hole who assumes that any white guy who has a gun and does something this stupid has a CCW permit? Oh, by the way Steve, I am one of the FEW people in this sorry state who has a CCW permit from the state of Maryland. I have carried a gun for years and other than my wife, no one has EVER seen my gun when I carry it nor do I even tell anyone that I have the permit to carry. I, and all others who have these permits, know that the day that you decide to take your gun out of its holster in public, YOUR LIFE WILL CHANGE FOREVER. If you unfortunate enough to have to shoot someone for ANY reason, the consequences are obvious (long legal battles and enormous legal fees). The same is true even if you draw your firearm and simply hold a perpetrator at gunpoint while awaiting the arrival of the police. No, Steve, it is an ENORMOUS responsibility to have a firearm on one's person even legally. And thanks to uninformed IDIOTS like yourself it is all too UNCOMMON in this state.
David Taylor February 23, 2013 at 10:04 PM
Another #Conspiracy theorist ... who says that since the guy isn't from the city, but is a rich dentist, it's unlikely he would commit a crime... go figure that. Sorry, but this, "the cops and this family were out to get him" theory holds no water. Don't you think if a guy threatens people with a gun in traffic, and he's then found with the gun hidden under his car seat, that it's reasonable for the police to bring the guy in? You think the police should ask him, "are you rich and from the county? I'm sorry sir, go about your business" - And nobody is calling to string the dentist up here... however, I do see you guys with your conspiracy theory and victim mentality, attacking folks here who want to talk about the topic and throwing around crazy accusations against the police and other Patch users... if you had a point to make or information to contribute, I suspect you would have done that, but alas... it's just "the cops are out to get us, it's an anti-gun conspiracy!" Wow ...it must be tough for you, being so afraid all the time. Thanks for sharing your harrowing tale of a black tow truck driver who drove near to your car after you blew your horn at him, I'm glad you survived that ordeal :/
Steve February 23, 2013 at 10:14 PM
Gas Giant is an appropriate name. We talked about it when he removed my wisdom teeth a year or so a go. "Few people" Another big lie. There are thousands of people in MD with CCW permits. That's more than a few in my book. Other than that , Save the Drama for your Momma. If I was the State I would revoke your permit for your obvious anger management issues....
David Taylor February 23, 2013 at 10:16 PM
Sooooo... just more excuses, name calling, false accusations, and other nonsense - you don't have any real point to make do you? I mean, other than your "anti-gun conspiracy theory" rants and yelling at the nice folks here on the The Patch for having the audacity to speak about the topic. And for the record, I eat fiber almost every day for regularity... I can't comment on the moral character of my bran flakes, but they have always been nice to me.
Aaron Wilkinson February 23, 2013 at 10:17 PM
Oh Canada !
Ed February 24, 2013 at 03:36 AM
So then Gregg, I have to ask, would you have felt the same way if the tow truck driver was some long-haired, roughneck white guy? There are plenty of them in certain neighborhoods (probably not Phoenix, though.) There seems to be a lot of obsession on here about him being a doctor and living in Phoenix and because of that, he doesn't fit the "profile." Legally, he's innocent until proven guilty. Unfortunately, the court of public opinion isn't held to the same standard. And Gregg, if people weren't arrested until cops had "proof" there wouldn't be the need for a trial. They apparently had statements from a witness, a description of the suspect's car, and gun was found under the seat. Absolute grounds for arrest; maybe not enough for a conviction. We shall see.
Ed February 24, 2013 at 03:38 AM
Perhaps that would be because we are several hundred years younger than the rest of the Western world? And than China.
Holton F. Brown February 24, 2013 at 04:22 PM
Here's something for you: What if the victim in this incident would have also been carrying?? "Gunfight at the Towson Roundabout" would have been the headline....
Towsongirl February 24, 2013 at 04:30 PM
You are all idiots! He is a nutcase who pulled a gun out at a traffic stop! That is not normal he should be punished! Take it from someone who knows him!!!
Ed February 24, 2013 at 05:14 PM
Um, towsongirl, some of the people on here already have him tried and convicted (like you) and others think that because he is a white dentist from Phoenix, its out of character for him. And yet you say they are ALL idiots? Think maybe you could add some intelligent conversation?
Tim February 25, 2013 at 04:44 AM
LOL, anyone comparing today to the 1950's and suggesting it was so much better back then is looking through history with rose colored glasses.
Darnell Williams February 25, 2013 at 01:44 PM
if none of you haven't had this happen to you I'm sure you're feeling all of the sympathy you can muster for this guy. However once someone threatens the life of yourself and your family I'm sure the tune will change. You won't be so understanding. Being violated and threatened for any reason should not be tolerated...black, white, brown, etc.,. It's horrible to even consider that he is just simply a "nice guy", and this matter should be excused like it's a traffic infraction. For mankind's sake, the kind pulled a pistol on a family. Wrong to do! he not only endangered the lives of the family but he as well endangered the lives of law officers responding, others pedestrians and himself. Oh yeah imagine how his family now feels. If he is truly the nice guy you all say he is, I hope he gets ceases all behavior like this and get rid of any guns he has....for everyone's sake.
Ed February 25, 2013 at 09:44 PM
Darnell, a relatively small number of people on here are feeling sympathy, most are not, which is fine. Assuming he did what is alleged, I don't feel any for him either. BUT, he has NOT been convicted yet. If a judge or jury finds him guilty, throw the book at him. But can't we wait for a trial before we decide on the punishment?
HuntValley Woman March 01, 2013 at 01:07 AM
HuntValley Woman I am appalled & distrurbed by the comments I am reading! All of you assinine jackasses except for a few are quoting & talking about gun laws & permits; but NEITHER one of you JackAssB*^es are thinking about nor giving a thought or flying fig newton about the CHILDREN in the car. So what Dr. John Emmett, an Oral Surgeon has a permit for his handgun! It doesn't make him a GOD nor does it give him the right to brandish & wield it at a FAMILY!!!! Get real people, IT COULD HAVE BEEN YOU & YOUR CHILDREN. Let's not forget about the maniac who brazenly killed 27 children & adults. Just because you have prestige does not put you above the law, nor should it or allow you to disregard humanity. What if Dr. John Emmett decided to whip out his gun while you, your children or one of your family members were having oral surgery in his office?!?!?! What are you going to do? Where Kevlar while in the reception area? FOOLS Think about the children
Michael Kracken March 06, 2013 at 02:17 AM
Why not repeal all the amendments you moron?
Dave March 06, 2013 at 02:28 AM
Anybody who says something this stupid should be arrested and required to submit to a mental health evaluation.
bob June 11, 2013 at 11:12 PM
The Gas Giant who responded is absolutely 100% correct as I also carry. He is the "poster Child" of your response, your responsibility, and the fact that a few seconds of mis-judgement or "getting even", will change your life as you know it forever . After reading his comment, I did not read anymore as they are superfluous. Just read the sun's road rage death of a New Jersey policeman shooting a man to death after they both pulled over for road rage. Was this all woth it? Stupid, Stupid, Stupid. If you refute what I or the Gas Giant said, then live in you cave of ignorant bliss. I guess you do need ignorant, stupid people in this world to allow smart people to be recognized
