Attorneys Discuss Huguely, Love's Violent Relationship

Opening arguments began Wednesday in George Huguely's murder trial.

With the jury seated, opening arguments began Wednesday in the murder trial of George Huguely V.

Huguely, 24, of Chevy Chase is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend, Yeardley Love, 22, of Cockeysville, in her off-campus apartment near the University of Virginia in May 2010.

The jury was sworn in Wednesday in Charlottesville Circuit Court.

Attorneys portray their relationship as abusive, tumultuous and violent. The Washington Post reports that in an email just days before her death, Huguely told Love, "I should have killed you."

On May 2, 2010, he allegedly went to her apartment, beat her and left her in a pool of blood, where she was later found dead.

"The reality is the next time George Huguely saw her alone, he killed her," prosecutor Warner D. Chapman said in opening arguments, according to The Baltimore Sun.

Defense attorneys originally planned to portray Love's death as accidental and more related to an irregular heartbeat caused by prescription Adderall, according to the Post. In opening arguments, the defense urged the jury to consider an involuntary manslaughter conviction, The (Charlottesville) Daily Progress reports.

Love's mother, Sharon, was one of the first to testify, telling the court how she first learned of her daughter's death.

The trial is expected to last for 17 days.
