U.S. Forces Kill Osama Bin Laden

President Obama makes announcement in Sunday evening address.

UPDATED (10:16 a.m.) — The Huffington Post is following reports, now confirmed by President Barack Obama, that American special forces have killed terrorist Osama bin Laden in Pakistan.

In a speech at 11:30 p.m. Sunday from the White House's East Room, the president discussed the operation that led to the al-Qaida founder's death.

Politico reported Sunday evening via Twitter that officials spent Sunday evening contacting congressional leaders, including Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger, a Baltimore County Democrat and the ranking member on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

Officials from around Maryland released statements Monday about the death of bin Laden.

Gov. Martin O'Malley, Democrat: “This closes a sad and tragic chapter in our country and our world’s history. Commend the men and women of our Armed Forces and the dedicated public servants of our nation’s security agencies. This should be a day of reflection and prayer for a more peaceful future.”

Rep. Andy Harris, Republican: “Last night, President Obama announced that American forces had killed terrorist and 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden.  This is great news for the security of America, as well as for our troops at home and overseas who continue to protect us from terrorism every day.  I want to thank and congratulate all of our men and women in the Armed Forces – their hard work and bravery made this possible. This is a great day for the United States of America.”

County Executive Kevin Kamenetz, Democrat: "On this historic morning, I hope that all Baltimore County citizens will take a moment to remember those who perished in the horrific events of September 11, 2001.  On that fateful morning our nation would be changed forever.  From that moment on, there would always be a pre 9/11 and a post 9/11 world.

We observed the amazing courage of our first responders who did what they were trained to do. They risked their lives so others could live. Their courage was extraordinary; but to those brave men and women, it was simply ordinary.

I continue to pray for the members of our armed forces who are stationed around the world striving to protect the freedoms that we so rightly cherish.  I hope the success of last night's military mission brings some closure and hopefully a little peace to those who still grieve for loved ones that did not return home on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. "

Updates to follow.

It's always a great day to be an American.
WTG Intellience Community, Navy Seals, and Obama's decision to actually capture the body - providing unquestionable proof. Reports say he was given the option to just level the entire compound last month, but Obama decided a) he wanted the body, dead or alive and b) He didn't want to have to kill everyone in the compound

There are too many emotions to accurately describe how I'm feeling. I think I'm still in shock. A big THANK YOU goes out to everyone in the US Military for continuing to keep us safe. This is far from over, but today we get to celebrate a major victory!

Through hard work, unbelievable persistence, blood, sweat and tears, our military has succeeded in bringing closure to a sad chapter in our history. While celebrating this accomplishment, let's continue to pray for all those who have suffered through this episode. I pray that our intelligence corps and national leaders will double their efforts to foster peace for our nation and all others in the free world.

How do we know if Osama Bin Ladin is truly dead? Why no pics of his body? Why did they bury his body at sea? I pray this is the end and not the beginning of more assaults on America.

Ol' Sammy Been Laden has been whacked-good-proper, by American Warriors. And I'm singing the following lyrics - about those warriors - to the tune of "Get Down Tonight" by KC & The Sunshine Band:
Kick 'im in the ass, shoot 'm in the head, America's got the right. America's got the right. Kick 'im in the ass, shoot 'im in the head, Make sure he's dead. Make sure he's dead.

I don't know about how much "closure" the death of Osama Bin Laden brings to the family members who lost loved ones in 9/11. They will always have those memories, those anniversaries, those devastating images. However, they may feel a sense of justice having been served. I wish love and peace for us all.
