State Highway Administration Seeking Input for Possible Charles Street Sidewalks

Sidewalks have been proposed along parts of Charles Street near the city and county line.

The Maryland State Highway Administration is hosting community input meeting to discuss the possibility of sidewalks along parts of Charles Street.

The sidewalks would be located near the city and county line, according to an email from Councilman David Marks, who represents Towson. The meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Monday at Church of the Redeemer Auditorium, 5603 North Charles Street.

In case of inclement weather, the meeting will be pushed back to March 5.

"I know this is a priority for community leaders in the Bellona/Gittings area, and have had several discussions with my colleague City Councilman Bill Henry about the need to better connect the neighborhoods that abut the line between Baltimore City and County," Marks wrote in the email.

Sidewalks are always a safer way to go for peds. What is the discussion?

ABSOLUTELY NEED SIDEWALKS AND BIKE LANE WOULD BE EVEN BETTER! Everytime I see a runner/biker on that section of Charles Street (and there are many--it is one of the few north/south thru streets), I wonder if they will be the next headline in the Patch...

This is just another example of local government, and other officials wasting time and money. What's to discuss?! Pedestrians need sidewalks, cyclists must have bike lanes, and drivers need road rage counseling. There are a few areas near Loyola University needing adequate sidewalks. I’m tired of walking on the grass or street.

paerki, with all due respect - if the sidewalks suddenly appeared, there would be complaints about a lack of community involvement. It isn't a "waste" of time to have one meeting to give people the opportunity to speak up, since my understanding is that the sidewalks may have some property impacts on the western side of Charles Street. Loyola University farther south into Baltimore City, so I would suggest complaining to your City Councilmember or state legislator.

Councilman Marks...Thanks for initiating this project. The meeting on Monday went well. It is good to see the community and government officials working together to get a positive program completed. Several Patch comments also recommended bike access. That was my main concern at the meeting. Not for anything new, but to at least maintain what is there. The County Planning Office created a bike route down Charles Street in the early 80's. With the new bike lanes out near the Beltway and Charles, you can now ride on a bike route from there to the Inner Harbor. I have commuted to work for many years on that route and I see scores of bike commuters on Charles St. At some point, I suspect that route with connect with the new Towson Bike Beltway. However, the section of Charles St where the sidewalks are proposed is the most challenging part of the route. There is only a 1 to 2 foot lane separating bikes from the heavy traffic on Charles. It appears from the initial designs the lane will remain intact. However, I hope SHA can do everything in their power to not infringe on that small lane. Thanks so much!
