The 'Presidential Agenda Election' of 2012

The struggle of what the agenda is for the 2012 presidential election will decide the race.

"In circumstances like that, there are efforts made, sometimes desperate efforts, to change the subject.” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney, claiming that Gov. Mitt Romney’s videotaped statement to the effect that 47 percent of the country is increasingly dependent on government is what the country should discuss, not the issue of President Obama’s support of redistribution of wealth.

The 2012 presidential election, more than perhaps any election in history, will
turn on what issue(s) acquire agenda status for the voting electorate of
America, and perhaps only the voting electorate of swing states.

Who determines what the issues are in a presidential campaign? Why is a topic
such as the president’s non-secretly videotaped support of redistribution of
wealth changing the subject from a legitimate one to an illegitimate
one?

For over 35 years, I have argued in my field of Mass Communication and Communication Studies that persuasion (or rhetoric) is
about 2 things: “agenda creation,” the competition to determine what persuaders
and audiences discuss, and “spin,” trying to infuse interpretation, meaning and
significance for audiences into the agenda made salient for them.

This year's election is the perfect application of this theory of persuasion. In
my book, The Only Authentic Book of Persuasion, there is a 2012 cartoon
by Ed Gamble of the King Features Syndicate in which a chap representing "Gay
Groups" is sitting next to the president who is supporting "same sex marriage,"
and the president says, "let's hope this evolves to be another issue that
distracts voters from the economy."

The unemployment rate appears to be permanently mired in 8-plus percentage territory, or at least until the end of the current administration. The economy is disastrous. Foreign policy choices arguably threaten instability across the Middle East and north Africa and possibly allow a Iranian game-changer in the calculus of nuclear-armed countries and its geopolitical consequences.

So what issues have the Democrats tried to substitute for the economy on the national agenda? Mitt Romney's unreleased tax returns, Todd Akin's ignorant superstition that a "legitimate" rape cannot result in pregnancy; the fiction that Gov. Romney's policies at Bain Capital led to a woman's death; the alleged Republican "War on Women," Gov. Romney’s claim that he has an uphill climb to receive the votes of beneficiaries of government largess and other even less significant matters.

In a recent USA Today interview, Gov. Romney said, intriguingly enough, "There are plenty of weaknesses that I have, and I acknowledge that, but the attacks that have come have been so misguided...[and] have been so dishonest that they surprised me. I thought they might go after me on things that were accurate that I’ve done wrong, instead of absurd things.”

It is the essence of political persuasion: make the topic you want salient, salient…and try to de-emphasize topics that redound to your detriment.

This has been done before in presidential elections, but never so preposterously
or clownishly, and it has never been so effective, except maybe in 2004, but
even then the Bush Administration met opposing arguments on seminal issues
head-on while focusing somewhat on Sen. John Kerry’s war record and alleged
flip-flopping.

Much of the media have a critical role in helping to determine with what issues they confront candidates, and the Democratic agenda seems in large part to be fine with them, perhaps because personal attacks are less complicated than economic and foreign policy analysis.

This election will concern, as all do, the interpretation of issues, but first and foremost it is an election concerning what is the presidential election agenda.

The short shrift given to the inarguably important agenda of economic and foreign policy issues constitutes a rhetorical victory for those favoring a non-substantive American presidential election.

If the message is wrong how do you explain the historic Tea Party "shellacking" of the Democrats in the of 2010 election, just 2 short years ago?
What has turned that tide the opposite way Just a Guy?
Joe October 3, 2012 at 01:36 pm
Or how do you explain this story?
"A Guardian survey of six of the most crucial swing states upon which the outcome of the presidential ballot is likely to depend has found that new voter registrations recorded between January and August this year are markedly down compared with the same period in 2008. The drop is particularly pronounced in several states for the Democrats – a likely indication that Barack Obama's re-election team has been unable to match the exceptional levels of voter excitement generated by his candidacy four years ago. The six states included in the Guardian survey – Colorado, Iowa, Florida, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia – are all being bitterly fought over by Obama and his challenger Mitt Romney. Backed by their respective Democratic and Republican parties, both candidates have sought to maximise turnout by running registration drives in an attempt to attract new voters to their cause." http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/oct/02/voter-registration-slumps-obama-romney

One more thread appropriately handled by the great tag team efforts of Joe and Lorna...! It's really not fair that they take such advantage of regular losers in this arena, but the facts that are shared by them remain true and necessary.
Thanks for the effort that goes into these very informing debates....and Lorna,"honeychild", you continue to make me smile...) thanks..

I loved watching Obama last night. To repeat the wording of Senator Harry Reid, Obama did speak in his "Negro dialect" for 40 minutes. I just wonder how the hell he lost that dialect since he was elected.
He sounded exactly like Screwy Louis Farraklan or his Preacher Rev Wright. He TOLD us his agenda in that 40 minutes. I am surprised Obama didn't blame Bush for blowing up the levy like Farraklan did. "Damn the white man who hates you all!" "God DAMN America!!"

I am of the opinion that our Country MUST completely bottom out at an accelerated rate, so that the sleeping majority will have no choice but to wake up and begin to pay attention. Until this point has been reached, the real restoration of our Country will continue to be put on hold, prolonging the agony. Neither party has the talent or ability to pull us out of this mess at this point. Let the chips fall where they may..!!

Joe, Lorna, I feel sorry for you. You are continually lost in your own little bubbles.
Buck Harmon October 3, 2012 at 02:50 pm
Once again...Any attempt at reasonable debate with Steve is like playing chess with a pigeon.
No matter how good you are at chess, the pigeon will walk all over the board, knock over all of the pieces, crap on it , and then strut about with it's chest puffed out as though it were the winner... Steve would be the perfect model of a Patch Pigeon....crappin up every thread that he encounters..

When you lose the debate and have nothing else to offer "I feel sorry for you. You are continually lost in your own little bubbles." is what we expect from you. You have not let us down.

"They don't make anything."
They make poorly performing companies turn around and become profitable employers. Does that not mean anything to you? They have a 70% success rate in their turnarounds. They borrow money is correct. From investors looking for a safe profitable investment. Your discription of Bains work shows just how uninformed, or mis informed you really are. 70% success rate. When you are asked to come in to a struggling company, sometimes they just cannot stop the bleeding. Most times they can. More evidence of your uninformed self is the Staples comment. Can't or refuse to name all the others. Ever hear of Steel Dynamics? An American Steel Company in business and with employees. You still have your wet blanket in a gun fight.

And Just a Guy, BAIN is run by and doing the exact same work now under the Obama bundler Levine. So why is Obama, and yourself, not slamming Bain and Levine now? Why are Obama and the democrats STILL taking his evil money? Because they are hypocrites.

Don;t kill the messenger, watch the video and watch WHO Obama truly is in his heart.

The debate was lost at this post from the mentally challenged one.
Joe 2:57 pm on Tuesday, October 2, 2012 Which radical Muslim said the following? "The future must not belong to those who slander the Prophet of Islam." Ayatollah Khomeini? Osama bin Laden? Mahmoud Ahmadinejad? Khalid Sheikh Mohammed? Barack Hussein Obama? Which is pushing Sharia and the limiting of the USA's freedom of speech?

Bain capital is in the business of equity extraction. If you don't know what that is, look it up. If any other businessman had over 20% of the business they bought file for bankruptcy under massive debt loads, they would be a failure. But apparently, as long as you get really rich, it's ok... I'm sure that the other companies that are still in business, is a lucky coincidence...
And just exactly how do you get 100 Million dollars into an IRA? How is that possible? at a maximum of $30K per year, not even the 1000% roi from Bain makes that work...
Joe October 3, 2012 at 04:21 pm
More misrepresentation of Bain and what they do. No surprise there.
They do far more than you state. But your blinders prevent you form seeing the whole picture. 70% success in turning already failing companies around is an excellent record. Bain is not called on to help very successful companies. Just failing ones. http://www.baincapital.com/
Joe October 3, 2012 at 04:39 pm
OHHHHH OHHHH I know the answer, Barack Hussein Obama said that!
But he didn't use "his negro dialect" when he said it like he did in 2007 to those preachers including his Spiritual Mentor Rev "God Damn America" Wright.
Steve October 3, 2012 at 04:53 pm
You are so out of touch with reality, in one post you refer to the President as a "Radical Muslim' and in the next post you say he has a Reverend as a Spiritual Mentor.
Which is it? It can't be both......... What a Maroon!
Joe October 3, 2012 at 05:09 pm
Of course it can be both Steve. He was by all accounts and from his books, he tells us he was born a Muslim, attended Muslin schools in a Muslim country.
He seems to tell us he converted to Christianity at Wrights church. that would make him an apostate and many Islamists consider that a death penalty crime under Sharia. Steve, we all know Obama used and exploited the poor ignorant folks he organized to further his career. We know he used Rev Wright's church the same way. No on get ahead in Chicago without being a part of the community church. He used and exploited the church and its people for political and personal gain. As soon as he needed, he threw Wright under the bus, publicly only, as we see in the 2007 video where he sounds like Louis Farraklan in his "negro dialect" where he again PRAISES Wright after he threw him under the bus publicly. Who IS the real Obama? the one in that 2007 video or the fraud now sitting in the WH and failing the country and failing our national security?

I understand your point, but disagree so very much. I strongly feel we will only have one, maybe two opportunities at most, to get back on track and that is only if Romney wins NOW!!. So far he has had a little trouble understanding that he is not meeting with the boys and girls in the Board room..and needs to sadly get down and dirty speaking the language that folks like Steve understand as the moment(s) require..
And guys, take it easy on poor Steveee...he is trying his best to control himself, but that school yard garbaage just gets the better of him. His racist tendencies are always just below a feverish pitch...OMG what will happen if his man wins???? Stevee might go off the deep end in an overwhelming state of pure rapture. :-) My advice to all is REMEMBER TO REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER!!!

Like a serious drug addict...our Country has been addicted to corporate greed for far too long...until the absolute rock bottom has been experienced, the process of waking up the majority to begin the real repair, or restoration of our Country will be efforts in vain...greed will continue to prolong the agony. Greed will in fact buy this election and Obama will be placed. At this point our Country WILL fail. Sooner will be better for the grandchildren. This of course is just my humble opinion
