It's a good call. Nice to see that Superintendent Dance made the right call. They already have a half day Friday, a conveniently placed "professional day" on Monday and then closing for the elections. They also have now started having the Monday off on Thanksgiving week, so I guess the kids have to go to school sometime.

Outstanding decision by Dr. Dance here. Get these kids back to school. It's unfortunate that there are still a minority of schools unable to open, but what's more important? Holding back EVERYONE, or moving forward with the vast majority of students back to learning, and parents back to work instead of bleeding money/PTO/comp time. It's not like all of these schools have air conditioning to simply tack on day after day at the end of the year, either. ...at least not yet.

Seriously.

I am looking forward to getting back to as much of a routine as possible, however I an concerned about the road conditions and students' safety getting to school tommorow. I don't think this was the best decision.
PTAmom October 31, 2012 at 05:10 AM
Bad call. School busses should not be on the roads and kids should not be walking to school while workers are trying to clear fallen trees and electrical lines. Someone made a goofy decision.

My kids got off to school without a hitch. After a long walk throughout the Nottingham community this morning, I was relieved to see very little, if any, damage of any kind. Traffic is normal, lights operational, people outside raking up and a few even mowing. I'm sure there are a few areas that will have problems, but this was an excellent call to get the kids back to school. I know my kids were actually eager to get back to business and especially see their friends and get out of the house.

Evets, your information is incorrect. The Monday off is the week OF Thanksgiving, the 19th. However, it is for conferences, which can be done AFTER school, like they have been for decades. They will do anything to tack three and four weekends together, interrupting learning and making it difficult for working parents everywhere. I love hearing, "Again?!! Are you kidding me?" when having to make arrangements for the never ending holiday weekends the schools enjoy. I'm sure a lot of folks would like to have at least one or two three or four day weekends a month and still get paid for them.

Probably could avoid buying air conditioning too. Shorten the school year. Two weeks at Christmas and Easter. Those are days, not weeks. Longer school day, shorter school year! Hooray, but not going to happen.
PerryHallParent October 31, 2012 at 07:25 PM
They is the school system. We never had entire days off for conferences. People have jobs and they either came in after school for conference night or in emergency situations, in the evening. I'm not talking about the teachers. Figures you would assume that. I love how people make assumptions on here. I think today I've been accused of being a Princess (I wish), been called a "sheeple" (I don't use that word because I like to think for myself and am an independent), oh and I supposedly am a female who drives a Prius. I've also been told I'm white, old and too many hilarious things to mention. So "THEY" are the school system administrators who make up the calendar. DUH! I'll bet my teaching degree on it!
PerryHallParent October 31, 2012 at 07:27 PM
Oh FIFA, don't call it "Christmas" or "Easter", you might upset the atheists or whatever they are calling themselves this week. LOL It's "Winter holiday" and "Spring vacation".

People around here don't have a clue about real storms. there was no reason to close the schools past monday other than the ones without power. wish schools closed for a little rain when I was younger. and as far as closing schools for the bull sessions well who cares are educational system has become as much of a joke as our government
PerryHallParent October 31, 2012 at 08:40 PM
chuck, you think like I do. People whining and moaning about the roads and no power. I've had to get ready for work plenty of times in power outages and you MAKE DO. You wash up as best you can and get ready, then stop by a friend's house or family member's place and take a shower. You get take out and do what you can. I can't get over the whining really. We have become a nation of wimps. When I saw that the entire Harford County Government closed today I'm just glad I didn't have a mouthful of water when I read that. Unreal.

OT and I don't agree on much, but here we are like Obama and Christie. The school year has been artificially lengthened and now demands air conditioning. I am an atheist PHP, but I still give consideration to those who believe. But why a week off? Same at Easter? Makes no sense. I can accommodate the holiday, but not a week. Imagine the millions we save by not needing air conditioning.
Joe October 31, 2012 at 09:56 PM
Fifa, what is PHP after atheist in your post? Being a confessing atheist does explain much of who you are.
FIFA October 31, 2012 at 10:57 PM
You know Joe, you are simply a pathetic person. I as an atheist, the subject brought up by PHP, will put my moral values up agianst yours any day, any where. You are a sniveling coward whose hate spews from your pores for all to see. And to imagine you believe in an almighty powerful, all loving god is beyond belief. That bridge in Brooklyn is for sale, you smell like a buyer.
FIFA October 31, 2012 at 10:58 PM
OT, Sandy is done with us. Her sister/brother may be back next year.
FIFA October 31, 2012 at 11:03 PM
PS - Perry Hall Parent - I don't laugh at your belief in a god, so please don't scoff at my failure to believe in your god. I am not an animal. I simply don't believe in your Being.
