Super Bowl Delays Perry Hall Area Private School

St. Joseph School, Fullerton on Belair Road planned to open two hours late on Monday.

Did the Ravens' Super Bowl win—and any subsequent celebrations—leave you wishing for a couple extra hours of sleep Monday morning?

, one of the Perry Hall area's largest private schools serving K-8, announced a plan to offer students just that.

A parent forwarded the following email, delivered on Jan. 30, from the school:

Because so many teachers and students will be up late watching the Super Bowl on Sunday night, St. Joseph School, Fullerton, will open two hours late on Monday, February 4, 2013.  A flyer with more complete information was sent home with the students today.  Thank you for your understanding of the need for sleep for these children.

A notice on the school's online calendar confirmed the planned two-hour delay.

A parent, who declined to be identified, stated that the delay needlessly causes hardship for working parents.

As a policy, the school follows the weather-related closure and delay schedule announced by Baltimore County Public Schools. Any deviations from that schedule are announced to parents and publicized on the school's website.

Do Super Bowl celebrations justify a late start to the school day? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Just in case anyone was wondering...John Carroll in Harford County closed for the entire day...while the public school kids attended class. Being a parent in both the private & public school system...I think school is school and it should be left up to each individual family. Hmmmmm, that's a thought...it's late...and my boss expects me to be at work on time...despite there is a Ravens parade tomorrow...can you imagine that?!?!

What a great decision by St. Joseph's!

I would like to know what parent submitted this note. My child goes to St. Joes and a I am a full time working parent. At least we were forwarned about opening late and can make arrangements in advance. Where as if we went in late for a snow, we full time working parents don't have last minute arrangements on these days. If you have problems with the administration at St. Joes I suggest you leave your complaints with them and not on the Patch.

As a teacher I can tell you many of the children needed the sleep. Many of them were still sleepy with the delay. However unlike previous years, even when we weren't in the Super Bowl, attendance was not good. I had perfect attendance on Monday with the delay. I was able to teach reading, math, and social studies even with the shortened day. Many private schools delayed or used floating holidays to take off. St. Joseph is an excellent school that completely prepares children for high school. My two children have done extremely well there.
