Michael Phelps set an Olympic record and earned his first individual gold in the London Olympics on Thursday evening, as he edged teammate Ryan Lochte in the 200-meter individualized medley.
With the win, the Huffington Post reports, the Rodgers Forge native is the first male swimmer to earn gold in the same event in three Olympics.
Phelps finished with a time of 1:54.27, just six-tenths of a second ahead of Lochte. Hungarian Lazlo Cseh took the bronze.
The win continues another historic Olympics for Phelps, who with 20 medals—16 gold, two silver and two bronze—stands alone as the most decorated Olympian in history, with two events left before the week is out.
Meanwhile, how to honor the champion when he comes home from London.
