VIDEO: Ripken Tells Why 'Orioles Magic' is Back

Legendary shortstop Cal Ripken Jr. said the Baltimore Orioles have developed new confidence.

The last time the Baltimore Orioles made the playoffs, Cal Ripken Jr. was still playing for the team. It was 1997. On Friday at the Perry Hall Giant, after accepting a donation toward his charity, Ripken reflected on the team's new found confidence and the influence of manager Buck Showalter. "This new form of Orioles magic—it's built on strong solid pitching and miraculous late-inning comebacks ... the bullpen is excellent and they believe in themselves," Ripken said. "We all bear the burden of feeling like it's been a long time since we've had a winning season, but this particular group of players is looking at it from this point in time. It's not like any of the other seasons," he added. What do you think has made the biggest difference…

Cal Ripken 'Ecstatic' For Manny Machado's Hot Start

The Orioles remain in the playoff hunt in August—how do you think the Birds will finish?

What if? What if the Orioles actually took those requests for Manny Machado seriously? The Orioles (62-53, second wild card leader) could have had a veteran starter, or a middle-of-the-road third baseman, if only they were willing to part with Machado. Standing pat was seen as a move for the long-term. After Machado's debut last week, Dan Duquette's reluctance to trade Machado is working out to be a positive in the short-term, too. Machado homered again Sunday—his third in four big league games. He's already been moved from the No. 9 spot to the No. 7 spot in the Orioles' order. How long before—like the Nationals did with outfielder Bryce Harper—we see Machado in a prime spot in the lineup? Only his bat will determine that. I immediately …

IronMan Emotional Discussing 'Premeditated' Abduction Of His Mother

An emotional Cal Ripken said during a news conference Friday at the B&O Warehouse overlooking Oriole Park at Camden Yards that he felt his mother was targeted.

An emotional Cal Ripken said Friday he feels his mother's abduction was premeditated. Ripken addressed a crowd of reporters and cameras Friday at the B&O Warehouse in Baltimore. Baseball's IronMan said Vi Ripken is doing well, 10 days after she was abducted at gunpoint from her Aberdeen home. He added that he is hoping to keep the spotlight on the suspect in the case. Ripken said he believed the evidence indicates his mother was targeted. "There was some thought given to it," he said. "The materials used to bind her were brought there, so there was a lot of evidence that shows somewhat of a plan, or that it was premeditated. Premeditated is my words." Asked what it was like when he first learned his mother may be missing, the usually stoic…

Really, Dave? My so-called "conspiracy theory" is that there are at least TWO people who SAW Ms. Ripken in a state of distress during that 24-hour period?? TWO people saw this (a woman blindfolded and mouth taped shut in the back seat of the car); and NEITHER FOLLOWED this vehicle while on the phone with 911?? I would have followed that car (NO MATTER WHAT). So, there goes YOUR theory. How do you…   more ›

The advertisements—jointly funded by Aberdeen Police Department, Harford County Sheriff's Office, Metro Crime Stoppers and the FBI—appeared on revolving billboards along Interstate 95 and Interstate 83. Everyone on here sounds like an expert. But, suppose it was your mother? Can you even imagine the fear of the mother and the family? I thank God that she is unharmed. I pray that the person is caught before he tries to abduct again.   more ›
