Yeardley Love's Mom, Sister Cry as Jury Weighs Sentence

George Huguely could face up to 60 years behind bars in the death of Yeardley Love.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA—Yeardley Love's mother and sister wept as they testified during sentencing proceedings Wednesday evening against the man convicted of murdering her. The sentencing phase could be complete as soon as tonight in the trial of George Huguely, 24, who was found guilty earlier Wednesday evening of second-degree murder and grand larceny in Love's May 3, 2010 death. He faces five to 40 years in prison on the murder conviction and up to 20 years on the larceny conviction. Huguely has served nearly two years since his 2010 arrest. After the jury delivers its recommendation, Charlottesville Circuit Court Judge Edward Hogshire will hand down Huguely's final sentence. During the sentencing hearing, prosecutors called just two …

Prosecution Rests, Defense Begins in Huguely Trial

The defense began Wednesday to attempt to cast doubt on the prosecution's claim that Yeardley Love died of blunt force trauma.

The defense started its case Wednesday in the trial of George Huguely, the University of Virginia lacrosse player accused in the 2010 killing of Cockeysville resident and ex-girlfriend Yeardley Love. The prosecution rested shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday in Charlottesville Circuit Court, after testimony that included Huguely's roommates and neighbors that painted a picture of what happened the day leading to Love's death early on May 3, 2010. The defense began by asking that all charges except grand larceny (for stealing Love's laptop) be dropped, claiming Huguely had no intent to commit the other crimes. Attorneys Discuss Huguely, Love's Violent Relationship

Opening arguments began Wednesday in George Huguely's murder trial.

With the jury seated, opening arguments began Wednesday in the murder trial of George Huguely V. Huguely, 24, of Chevy Chase is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend, Yeardley Love, 22, of Cockeysville, in her off-campus apartment near the University of Virginia in May 2010. The jury was sworn in Wednesday in Charlottesville Circuit Court. Attorneys portray their relationship as abusive, tumultuous and violent. The Washington Post reports that in an email just days before her death, Huguely told Love, "I should have killed you." On May 2, 2010, he allegedly went to her apartment, beat her and left her in a pool of blood, where she was later found dead.
