The mother of slain Notre Dame Preparatory School graduate Yeardley Love will be the keynote speaker at an upcoming seminar focused on safety as kids transition from high school to college. Sharon Love, mother of Yeardley Love, will speak April 16 at the Arbutus Library Meeting Room during a seminar called "Transition to College: Be Safe," aimed at helping high school seniors and their parents with the challenges of starting college life. Chevy Chase native George Huguely V, convicted in the beating death of his ex-girlfriend Yeardley Love, on Tuesday appealed his second-degree murder conviction to the Virginia Court of Appeals. Both Huguely and Love, a Cockeysville native and alumna of Notre Dame Preparatory School in Towson, played lacrosse at the University of Virginia. Huguely, 25, was convicted in February 2012 after a Charlottesville jury found he beat Love to death in her off-campus apartment. A Chevy Chase man is serving his 23-year sentence for murder in western Virginia. As first reported by the AP, George Huguely V is one of about 900 inmates at Keen Mountain Correctional Center, a high security prison in Oakwood, according to the Virginia Department of Corrections website. His projected release date is May 30, 2030. As part of an initiative to speak out against domestic violence through the One Love Foundation—created in honor of the slain University of Virginia lacrosse student, Sharon and Lexi Love, Yeardley's mother and sister respectively, are slated to appear on television Thursday. Huguely was sentenced Thursday to 23 years in prison for the 2010 murder of his ex-girlfriend, Cockeysville native Yeardley Love, according to WUSA. The Chevy Chase native was also given three years supervised probation (to follow the prison sentence) and is serving one year for larceny concurrently, the television station reports. After receiving $1.2 million in donations and planning for 18 months, Notre Dame Prepatory School is unveiling a field named after slain alumna Yeardley Love. The turf field will be dedicated on Sept. 9 at 5 p.m., according to a news release from the private Catholic school for girls. The ceremony will include a blessing, readings, music and addresses from school representatives. "Yeardley was both a stand-out lacrosse player and a stand-out person," said Patricia McCarron, the school's headmistress, in the release. "This field is a beautiful reminder of her dedication as a player, student and member of the NDP community."
