FEMA may reimburse up to 75 percent of storm-related expenses.
The deadline is approaching for nonprofits to claim federal aid for expenses related to Superstorm Sandy. The late-October storm drenched the mid-Atlantic. Nonprofits like volunteer fire companies must submit paperwork to the Federal Emergency Management Agency by Feb. 2. FEMA funding is only available for expenses incurred between Oct. 26 and Nov. 4. According to a Baltimore County news release, nonprofits must prove at least $1,000 in storm expenses, and will have 60 days to send in lists of storm damages and expenses. Up to 75 percent of storm expenses—including generators, repairs and tools—can be reimbursed. For more information and copies of FEMA's forms, residents can contact Baltimore County Office of Homeland Security and …

A National Weather Service forecaster said Maryland is unlikely to get much of a hit from the nor'easter developing to the southeast, one that could hit areas still recovering from Superstorm Sandy.
Here we go again? Just a week after Superstorm Sandy rumbled up the eastern seaboard, a powerful nor'easter appears set to do the same, with the outside chance to dump a wintry mix on parts of Maryland. In an advisory Monday, the National Weather Service said the storm is expected to develop off the Carolina coast on Tuesday before moving north. Ken Widelski, a forecaster with the NWS in Sterling, VA, said in a phone interview that how much precipitiation the Baltimore area gets—if any—depends on how far west the storm forms. "The exact track of the system is very uncertain right now," Widelski said. "There is a chance for some precipitation that would be generally Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday night. If that were the case, it could …

It took Agnes and Sandy, but it appears the old Cockeysville distillery's days are numbered. The old warehouse at the York Road and Railroad Avenue suffered a significant, partial wall collapse under pressure from Hurricane Sandy's high-speed winds. The same building saw its south wall collapse in 1972 after Hurricane Agnes flooded a nearby river sending heavy logs downstream. People who know the history of the building will point to a faint line 20 feet from the distillery's base indicating how high flood water rose. The Maryland State Highway Administration is now urging drivers to use Interstate 83, as northbound York Road lanes have been shutdown because of debris in the roadway. A building inspector is expected in Cockeysville …

Councilman David Marks said he spent the bulk of Tuesday morning in talks with Towson community leaders following post-tropical cyclone Sandy. "We generally fared much better than we did during the derecho," he said. Marks did acknowledge that some neighborhoods, including Rodgers Forge, Campus Hills, Idlewylde and Stoneleigh, were hit harder than others. The 5th district councilman, a Perry Hall Republican, also lauded Baltimore Gas & Electric for their communication and restoration efforts, which he said were far superior to the utilities company's handling of the summer derecho. "BGE has been much more proactive," Marks said. The derecho, or land hurricane, struck the region in late June and left many Towson residents without power for …
