The state senator sent a letter to the county liquor board chairman voicing his opposition to the license at the bowling alley ahead of a Monday hearing.
State Senator Jim Brochin is siding with the Campus Hills community in it's fight against AMF Towson Lanes obtaining a liquor license. Campus Hills residents have complained about disruptive activity occuring outside the bowling alley, and are petitioning against the license. An attorney representing Towson Lanes said management has found no evidence supporting the residents' accusations. Towson Lanes is scheduled for a liquor board hearing on Monday. Brochin, who represents Towson, sent the following letter to liquor board Chairman Charles Klein on Friday. The Towson-based Maryland Business for Responsive Government released its report on the recent General Assembly session.
The Towson-based interest group Maryland Business for Responsive Government this week released its scorecard of Maryland General Assembly members, based on votes taken during the most recent legislative session. The group grades legislators based on their voting records on the floor and in committees on bills supported or opposed by the organization. For example, the group gave out poor grades to senators and delegates who voted in favor of an income tax increase on higher earners, as well as those who voted in favor of doubling the "flush tax" fee on residences and businesses for the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund. In emails to their constituents, Dels. Susan Aumann and Steve Lafferty posted two very different reactions to the bill.
Following the House of Delegates passage last week of a bill to allow same-sex marriage in Maryland, two Towson-area delegates sent two very different emails to constituents. The 42nd district delegates split on the issue, with Democrat Steve Lafferty voting for the bill and Republican Susan Aumann (as well as colleague Bill Frank) voting against it. The Civil Marriage Protection Act now goes to the state Senate, which passed the bill last year and is likely to do so again. Sen. James Brochin, a Towson Democrat, voted for last year's bill. Lafferty, a Stoneleigh resident and co-sponsor of the measure, said the bill caused much soul-searching among his colleagues in a statement emailed to residents and posted on the Forge Flyer. I happen to bowl there in a weekly league and resent the implication of some of the comments. Bowling is a wholesome sport that helps bring a community together. I have never seen criminal or even very unruly conduct. People can get boisterous but that is true in any game or sport. Most bowling alleys that don't have liquor licenses allow the patrons to bring their-these lanes don't.   more ›
