It’s been ‘slow and steady,’ according to one election official.
Nearly 60,000 people in Maryland have turned out for early voting, a service the state started offering in 2010. The 59,716 people who turned out as of Wednesday represent 1.38 percent of eligible voters. There is still time to cast an early ballot on Thursday. Early voting in the state ends at 8 p.m. Check out our Tuesday story about early voting turnout at Towson University. “I’m using the phrase ‘slow and steady,' " said Montgomery County Board of Elections spokeswoman Marjorie Roher. “There are not lines in most cases at all; normally there’s one or two people at each of the poll places.” Early voting started March 24 and ends at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 29. More than 6,000 voters have cast their ballots so far.
There are two kinds of early voters. The kind in a hurry and the kind just taking advantage of a nice day to get it out of the way. Emily Serfling, a Timonium resident, declined to give her party affiliation as she strolled to her car outside the Administration Building at Towson University. She had family visiting next week, she said. "I wanted to get this done so I didn't have to bother them with it," she said before getting into her car. This is the second election cycle since Maryland enacted early voting laws. Towson University is one of Baltimore County's five early voting polling places. Early voting began Saturday and continues through Thursday ahead of next Tuesday's primary. As of the end of the day on Monday, 6,131 had voted …

"It's an honor" to have Mitt Romney in Arbutus, a resident says.
Updated at 5:45 p.m. to add quotes, description, background Mitt Romney made his sole visit to Maryland on Wednesday in advance of the state's April 3 GOP primary, telling a capacity crowd at a town hall meeting in Arbutus that President Obama is clueless about how to fix the economy. The leading Republican candidate, dressed in an open-collar shirt and jeans, greeted an overflow crowd of several hundred people who waited outside Dewey Lowman American Legion Post 109, then spoke and answered questions from a friendly crowd inside. Obama's poll numbers are hurting because "Americans are hurting," Romney said, to cheers. "Let's make sure that come Election Day, he is out of a job." Inside the hall, Romney got more cheers from a capacity …
The southwestern Baltimore County suburb of Arbutus is ideal for Romney's only visit to the state before the April 3 primary, a political leader says.
Fresh from his March 20 victory in the Illinois primary, Republican front-runner Mitt Romney headed today to Arbutus for a town hall forum at the Dewey Lowman American Legion Post 109. Romney is the first Republican presidential candidate in 2012 to visit the state in advance of the April 3 Maryland primary. His presence underscores the importance of the primary, which offers GOP candidates the chance to win 37 delegates in a political year when every state counts. A win in Maryland might avoid a brokered Republican national convention with former Sen. Rick Santorum, R-PA. Initial reports indicated that Romney would make three visits in Maryland, including a morning stop in Annapolis, the 3:30 p.m. town hall in Arbutus and an early evening…
