So, three months after turning 21, right around Christmas, I decided it was time to buy my first handgun. My stepfather, who is my lifelong firearms instructor, informed me that buying a handgun would be a long process. The most fun part of the process would be deciding what I wanted to buy. I wanted the gun for target shooting. I wanted something with inexpensive ammunition, and that was easy to operate, reliable and accurate. Green, the University of Maryland graduate student identified as the shooter in last week's apparent murder-suicide in College Park, had to undergo a state background check to purchase the 9mm handgun used to kill his roommate. But Green, who was schizophrenic, according to reports, did not have to undergo a state background check to purchase the semi-automatic Uzi .22 caliber rifle police found fully loaded next to his body. The tragic events in College Park have raised questions about the effectiveness of state gun laws in preventing the sale of deadly firearms to those suffering from mental illness. Campaign For Liberty Baltimore County will discuss Second Amendment rights and will be proposing a bill for the Maryland General Assembly Wednesday night in Timonium.
How strongly do you feel about the Second Amendment? If your answer triggered an emotionally charged response then the Holiday Inn in Timonium is the place to be Wednesday night. Local constitutional rights activism group Campaign For Liberty, Baltimore County, will be discussing Constitutional Carry laws, as well as the prospect of proposing a new bill for the Maryland General Assembly.
