President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. Barack Obama won Maryland’s 10 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Republican Mitt Romney. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Democratic candidate, and since the 1990s has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race three out of five times. Romney and Obama did not campaign aggressively in Maryland. The state has typically been a Democratic stronghold in recent presidential elections. Customers at the Towson Hess gas station could feel a little less pain at the pump on Thursday. The Maryland branch of Americans for Prosperity, a conservative political group that blames President Barack Obama for rising gas costs, will pay the difference so that the first 150 customers arriving between 4 and 6 p.m. are only charged $1.84 per gallon, according to a news release. "When President Obama took office in January 2009, gas cost just $1.84 per gallon," State Director Dave Schwartz said in the release. News organizations cited instant polls that showed voters believed both candidates did well in a face-off that was less contentious than past debates this season but offered up a few verbal highlights. Wednesday night marked a historic moment in the 2012 presidential election—the first one-on-one debate between President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney. Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney headed on a "blue state" tour after picking his running mate.
Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney headed for a campaign stop Saturday at Harris Pavilion in Manassas, VA, on a bus tour of "blue" states that did not include Maryland. Romney announced Saturday morning in Norfolk that he selected Rep. Paul Ryan, R-WI, as his running mate. Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell joined Romney and Ryan at the campaign stop at the USS Wisconsin, a retired battleship that is now a museum. Romney's tour stopped at Randolph-Macon college in Ashland, VA, and Manassas was to be his final bus stop on Saturday. The bus tour will continue on to North Carolina, Florida and Ohio Sunday through Tuesday. Andy Harris delivered a passionate critique on federal spending during a town hall meeting in Perry Hall on Wednesday afternoon—but when asked about upcoming congressional and presidential elections, he appeared more than a little disinterested. "We're six months out. People don't want to pay attention to that until after Labor Day. Right now, we're taking care of the district. There will be plenty of time for the election in the fall," he said. UPDATED (11:15 p.m.)— Mitt Romney has won the Maryland Republican presidential primary, according to multiple news outlets. At 11 p.m., Romney leads Rick Santorum 91,402 (48 percent) to 57,299 (30 percent) with 1,281 of 1,851 precincts reporting. "I voted for Romney, he's the lesser of the evils," said Lisa Watts of Darnestown, MD. Chuck Duvall also of Darnestown, said he voted for Ron Paul, but expected Romney to win the Maryland primary.
