Barack Obama Re-Elected President

President Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from President Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy. The race tightened during the final months of the campaign, with gaffes and surges …

Barack Obama Wins Maryland

Voters in Maryland on Tuesday gave the state's 10 electoral votes to Barack Obama.

Barack Obama won Maryland’s 10 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Republican Mitt Romney. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Democratic candidate, and since the 1990s has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race three out of five times. Romney and Obama did not campaign aggressively in Maryland. The state has typically been a Democratic stronghold in recent presidential elections.  ABC and CNN reported Obama had won Maryland within 30 minutes of the polls closing around the state. » Follow live election updates here and 'like' our Maryland Patch Facebook page. Women's rights at the national level were a key issue for some in Maryland, including Edgemere resident Trudie Stancliff. "I know of a lot of …

Americans For Prosperity Providing $1.84 Gas a Gallon in Towson

The conservative political group is protesting President Barack Obama's economic and energy policies.

Customers at the Towson Hess gas station could feel a little less pain at the pump on Thursday. The Maryland branch of Americans for Prosperity, a conservative political group that blames President Barack Obama for rising gas costs, will pay the difference so that the first 150 customers arriving between 4 and 6 p.m. are only charged $1.84 per gallon, according to a news release. "When President Obama took office in January 2009, gas cost just $1.84 per gallon," State Director Dave Schwartz said in the release. "Because of the president’s failing economic and energy policies, we’ve seen gas prices go to nearly $4 per gallon." Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney has touted high gas prices during the Obama administration as part of…

Obama-Romney Final Presidential Debate: Who Won?

The third presidential debate between President Obama and Mitt Romney focused on foreign policy. Who dominated? We want to know what Maryland thinks.

After President Obama and former Gov. Mitt Romney sparred aggressively last week, the candidates dug into foreign policy at Monday night's third and final presidential debate. News organizations cited instant polls that showed voters believed both candidates did well in a face-off that was less contentious than past debates this season but offered up a few verbal highlights. The two candidates had extensive exchanges on Iran and Syria, and the importance of the U.S.-Israel alliance. Obama responded to a charge by Romney that the Navy had fewer ships than it did in 1916. “We also have fewer horses and bayonets,” said Obama. Whom do you think won the debate? Tell us in comments. -- TV Channels Broadcasting Live: ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS, CNN, …

Who Won First Presidential Debate? What Marylanders Say

Marylanders appeared to agree with national pundits that Mitt Romney was forceful and persuasive in his debate with President Obama.

Wednesday night marked a historic moment in the 2012 presidential election—the first one-on-one debate between President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney. Moments in debate history have been seen as responsible for turning the tide for one presidential candidate or another. The first debate's verbal sparring was over domestic policy, and was held at the University of Denver. Millions of Americans watched on live television and online, including Patch users across Maryland. Citizens and journalists joined the conversation at a Patch viewing party at Buffalo Wild Wings in Owings Mills, MD. Local news organizations interviewed guests and filed reports from the scene. "Romney won, hands down," said Gary Lenz, of Glyndon…

Mitt Romney in Virginia Hours After Picking Rep. Paul Ryan for VP

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney headed on a "blue state" tour after picking his running mate.

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney headed for a campaign stop Saturday at Harris Pavilion in Manassas, VA, on a bus tour of "blue" states that did not include Maryland.  Romney announced Saturday morning in Norfolk that he selected Rep. Paul Ryan, R-WI, as his running mate. Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell joined Romney and Ryan at the campaign stop at the USS Wisconsin, a retired battleship that is now a museum. Romney's tour stopped at Randolph-Macon college in Ashland, VA, and Manassas was to be his final bus stop on Saturday. The bus tour will continue on to North Carolina, Florida and Ohio Sunday through Tuesday. Various road closures were in effect Saturday as Romney campaigned in Virginia, considered a battleground state in the …

Congressman Harris Says He's Saving Campaigning for Fall

U.S. Rep. Andy Harris said he would actively campaign for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney if requested.

U.S. Rep. Andy Harris delivered a passionate critique on federal spending during a town hall meeting in Perry Hall on Wednesday afternoon—but when asked about upcoming congressional and presidential elections, he appeared more than a little disinterested. "We're six months out. People don't want to pay attention to that until after Labor Day. Right now, we're taking care of the district. There will be plenty of time for the election in the fall," he said. According to his campaign website, his most recent campaign appearance included marching in the Kent Island Days Parade with the Queen Anne's County Republicans on May 19. But, otherwise, his campaign events have been sparse compared to the spring before his last election. Harris …

I agree that, regardless of wealth, it is a politician's record that should form the basis of our support. Unfortunately, Andy's record for the 1st District (and America, in general) is not worth supporting. Romney Wins Maryland Primary

Incumbents Cummings, Harris, Ruppersberger, and Sarbanes also lock up primary wins.

UPDATED (11:15 p.m.)— Mitt Romney has won the Maryland Republican presidential primary, according to multiple news outlets. At 11 p.m., Romney leads Rick Santorum 91,402 (48 percent) to 57,299 (30 percent) with 1,281 of 1,851 precincts reporting. "I voted for Romney, he's the lesser of the evils," said Lisa Watts of Darnestown, MD. Chuck Duvall also of Darnestown, said he voted for Ron Paul, but expected Romney to win the Maryland primary. Both he and his wife, Ruth, said they planned to support Romney against Democratic incumbent President Barack Obama even though he wasn't their primary selection. A Romney win in Maryland was not unexpected. CNN declared Romney the winner at 8 p.m. when polls in Maryland and Washington closed. “Maryland’…
