Despite actually passing the so-called fiscal cliff deadline, the Senate and House of Representatives passed a bill that President Barack Obama signed, preventing the country from actually going over the cliff, for now. The fiscal cliff essentially would have resulted in tax rates on all income levels reverting to where they were under President Bill Clinton along with cuts to the federal government’s discretionary spending. Spending on entitlements such as Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security would not have been touched. Some economist and politicians argued that the double whammy of increased taxes and reduced government spending could have crippled the economy’s fragile recovery from the 2008 recession. Baltimore County and City and seven other counties are affected by declaration.
President Barack Obama declared a state of emergency in Maryland Saturday afternoon as the first rain bands of Hurricane Irene reached the Baltimore metropolitan area. The declaration authorizes the Federal Emergency Management Agency to coordinate disaster relief efforts in the state. Baltimore, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s, Somerset, Talbot, Wicomico, Worcester and Baltimore City are affected by the declaration, which brings with it federal money to help pay for local responses to the storm.

Some 50 minutes after his motorcade arrived along Hiss Avenue—with just a brief glimpse of the president waving behind his limousine's tinted windows—Obama was leaving the same way he came in.
