Towson Law Firm Plans To Appeal Recher Liquor License

Charles Brooks will appeal the liquor license renewal granted Monday to the owners of the former Recher Theatre.

A Towson attorney said he plans to appeal a decision Monday to renew the liquor license held by the owners of the former Recher Theatre. Charles Brooks said he could file the appeal the decision of the Board of Liquor Licenses Commissioners as early as the end of next week. On Monday, the board dismissed Brooks' challenge to the renewal because he failed to have all of the community members who signed the petition present at the hearing, according to Mike Mohler, chief administrator for the board. Liquor license allow anyone to challenge a renewal as long as at least ten business owners or members of the community in the district where the licenses is issued signs a petition. Those rules then require that all who sign the petition appear …

Mr Brooks wants some free publicity. Everyone keeps worrying about a night club in Towson but no one is saying anything about the BIG PROJECT right behind the Recher that will have a 16 screen movies and at least 6 new restaurants. The fact that CVP has had problems shows you that its not what the venue is. IT IS THE ALCOHOL.   more ›

HonduROCK Proceeds Benefiting Orphans

The concert featuring Jimmie's Chick Shack will be one of the last at Recher Theatre in Towson.

HonduROCK, a concert organized by Towson University branch of Students Helping Honduras, will raise funds to benefit orphan girls. The money will fund the girls' move from lacking state-run orphanages to the Villa Soleada community, created by Students Helping Honduras, according to the group's Facebook Page. "Over the past three years [Students Helping Honduras] has raised $150,000 for these projects collectively," wrote Elliot Glotfelty, an organizer, in an email. "This year we have set a goal to raise $40,000 for the construction of a girls' home, replicating the success of the boys' home we built two years earlier." The concert, which will be one of the last at Recher Theatre, will feature Jimmie's Chicken Shack, The Lake Effect and …

Comment: ‘Is There Nothing Sacred Anymore?’

Baltimore-area Patch readers speak their minds.

This past week, Patch readers got riled about concert venue closures, Sonic coming to town, pet cemeteries and more. Here’s what your neighbors are saying: Towson Patch: “I have been a regular of the Recher for many years. I happen to know for a fact that it hasn't been profitable for them in a long time. They delayed this inevitable change as long as possible. But to survive they must adapt. I am sad to see this place and I doubt I will go to their nightclub, but I won't begrudge them the right to run a business that is actually profitable. It is the responsibility of the town council, and local government to provide safety, handle so-called riots, and police the area. That is not the concern of the business.” – RL on Recher Theatre …

Recher Nightclub Plan Worries Towson Residents

Community leader Paul Hartman said he would have liked advanced notice of plans to convert the Recher Theatre into the Torrent Lounge nightclub.

Greater Towson Council of Community Associations President Paul Hartman fielded calls from residents after news of plans to convert Recher Theatre into a nightclub called Torrent Lounge broke on Wednesday. "There are legitimate concerns based on the past history with nightclubs," said Hartman, referring to conflicts that arose 10 years ago between community members and Generation Xtremes Under 21 Nightclub, which was housed in the building currently occupied by The Greene Turtle. Hartman said young adults and teens were constantly milling about on the streets as a result of Generation Xtremes. "It caused a lot of problems in the area," he said. Similar to Councilman David Marks, Hartman expressed dismay about finding out about the plans …

Kamenetz, Marks Voice Differing Reactions to Recher Nightclub Transition

Co-owner Brian Recher shared plans to convert the Towson concert venue into a nightclub on Wednesday.

Two government leaders offered different responses to the announcement of the Recher Theatre's planned conversion to a nightclub called Torrent Lounge. County Executive Kevin Kamenetz lauded the Rechers for their efforts, and voiced his support for the initiative. "I am delighted that the Recher family plans to continue their tradition of reinvesting in downtown Towson with a half-million dollar project to create an attractive upscale nightclub," Kamenetz said in a statement. "I am confident that the Rechers will comply with all County rules and regulations and that this will be yet another positive addition to Towson." Kamenetz previously criticized Recher Theatre follow fights that occurred outside the venue in September 2012. After the …

Recher Theatre Shutting Down, Torrent Lounge Opening In Place

Owners of the concert venue plan to start construction of the Torrent Lounge nightclub in late-March.

(Update 3:49 p.m.)—After a nearly 17-year run, the Recher Theatre, a well-known Towson concert venue, is closing its doors. The Recher family, which owns the venue and the attached bar and restaurant The Rec Room, plans to convert the space into a nightclub called Torrent Lounge. "The [nightclub] scene is doing much better," said Brian Recher, who co-owns the spot with his brothers Steve Recher and Scott Recher. "The younger kids are going toward the DJ scene more." The Rechers have already started the first phase of the transition by revamping patio space at the venue. Brian Recher said additional renovations for Torrent Lounge will start in late-March, and band performances will continue until that time. An opening date for the new …

Kamenetz Reaction to Shooting at CVP 'Consistent' But Restrained

Police chief says alleged shooter was licensed to carry a gun and "had half a load on."

A shooting outside the Charles Village Pub in Towson is not drawing the same ire from County Executive Kevin Kamenetz as a brawl outside another Towson watering hole attracted in September. "I have consistently stated that the owner of a liquor establishment, a bar, have the responsibility for their patrons after they leave the building," said Kamenetz. Francis Minsung Kang, 26, of the unit block of Brook Farm Court in Cockeysville was charged early Sunday with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault and use of a handgun in committing a felony. Kang was leaving the Charles Village Pub when he allegedly threw a bottle of Gatorade at a woman and a fight ensued. He pulled out a handgun and fired five shots into a crowd, striking …

County "Moving Forward" After Recher Decision

County spokesman calls owners of the Towson venue "good corporate citizens" two months after County Executive Kevin Kamenetz blamed them for a brawl.

Two months ago, Brian and Scott Recher were solely to blame for a highly publicized brawl outside their Towson bar and concert venue, according to county officials. But a day after the brothers were vindicated by the liquor board, county officials say the pair are "good corporate citizens" and that they now want to "move forward." "The Rechers are an outstanding family and they have a really outstanding record of being good corporate citizens in Towson," said Don Mohler, a spokesman for County Executive Kevin Kamenetz. "Moving forward, there's not an ounce of positive energy in regret or looking backward," Mohler said. Two months ago, Kamenetz stood in front of the media and declared the Recher brothers responsible for a Sept. 22 brawl …

Recher Theatre Faces No Disciplinary Action Following Melee

The Towson venue incited controversy in September when fights occurred outside the facility.

Recher Theatre will keep its liquor license following a violent melee that occured outside its premises in September. The Towson venue appeared before the Baltimore County Liquor Board to defend its license on Monday. Baltimore County and Recher Theatre management came to a written agreement that the venue was not responsible for the incident. The agreement also listed stipulations such as not working with a promoter who would sell tickets in excess of Recher's capacity of 630 people to ensure that a similar event would not occur. Following the decision, Brian Recher, owner of Recher, thanked the Towson business community for its support. "We've entertained millions of people...we had one unfortunate incident," he said. Recher caught the …

WBAL TV: Police Out-Manned In Towson Melee

TV station reports that county police "encountered fistfights; drunken, defiant roving mobs and loitering party-goers under a cloud of marijuana smoke" during a fight outside the Recher Theatre while being under orders to "make as few arrests as possible.

Baltimore County Police officers responding to a fight outside the Recher Theatre in September were outmanned and under orders to make as few arrests as possible, according to a WBAL Television report. The station cites documents it obtained in the course of its reporting on the Sept. 23 incident. "Outmanned and under orders to use restraint and make as few arrests as possible, Baltimore County police encountered fistfights; drunken, defiant roving mobs and loitering party-goers under a cloud of marijuana smoke in the 500 block of York Road, where 1,500 people shut down the road and sidewalks -- and that was only the first wave of trouble," according to the news station's website. The owners of the Recher Theatre are scheduled to appear …
