FEMA may reimburse up to 75 percent of storm-related expenses.
The deadline is approaching for nonprofits to claim federal aid for expenses related to Superstorm Sandy. The late-October storm drenched the mid-Atlantic. Nonprofits like volunteer fire companies must submit paperwork to the Federal Emergency Management Agency by Feb. 2. FEMA funding is only available for expenses incurred between Oct. 26 and Nov. 4. According to a Baltimore County news release, nonprofits must prove at least $1,000 in storm expenses, and will have 60 days to send in lists of storm damages and expenses. Up to 75 percent of storm expenses—including generators, repairs and tools—can be reimbursed. The Towson fire company is assisting the New Jersey Volunteer Firemen's Association to help families in need.
For more than 60 years, the Providence Volunteer Fire Company has spread Christmas joy by taking Santa around Towson on a fire truck. Now, the fire company wants to extend the cheer to New Jersey communities ravaged by Superstorm Sandy. The company is asking Towson residents to donate lightly used or new toys and clothing for Sandy relief to their station, at 1416 Providence Road, until Dec. 15, according to an email from Garrett Zour, a 45-year member of the fire company. The items can be placed in containers located in the rear of the station. Personnel at Watson Elementary School in New York are collecting children's clothing for families in the area.
West Towson Elementary School is partnering with a New York school in a clothing drive to benefit families impacted by Superstorm Sandy. West Towson officials have asked parents, students and staff to donate gently used clothing for elementary age children, and drop them off at the school from Monday through Friday during school hours, according to a news release. The clothes will be transported to Watson Elementary School in Rockville Center, NY for distribution to local families in need.

A popular Baltimore event is coming to Towson—and for a good cause. On Saturday, The Gathering, a congregation of Baltimore area food trucks, is coming to the 400 block of Washington Avenue in an effort to collect donations for New Jersey residents suffering from the effects of Superstorm Sandy. The event will run from 1 to 5 p.m. Damian Bohager, a representative of the Maryland Mobile Food Vendors Association who is organizing the event alongside the Towson Chamber of Commerce, said 12 or 13 food trucks will be participating. The Baltimore Orioles are asking their fans to step up to the plate and donate supplies for Superstorm Sandy relief efforts. Birds fans are invited to bring donations to the Warehouse at Orioles Park until 5 p.m. Thursday or between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Friday, according to a news release. The Orioles, in partnership with Von Paris Moving and Storage, will send two to three moving trucks filled with donations to New Jersey communities that were hit hard during the recent storm. Those making donations can temporarily park in the North Warehouse Lot near the Orioles Team Store to drop off items at the second floor reception desk, the release reads. Councilman David Marks reports that substantial progress has been made in Towson recovery efforts following superstorm Sandy. In an email, Marks said power has been restored to the Greenbrier and West Towson communities. He said that Southland Hills and Campus Hills should receive power shortly as well. Additionally, a traffic signal at Hillen and Stevenson roads is now operational. The councilman is still awaiting word on Stoneleigh, Idlewylde and Hillendale Park.
