Towson University announced the departure of Athletics Director Mike Waddell Monday evening. After a two-and-a-half year tenure, Waddell will leave his post on June 10, according to a news release from the college. He will take over as the senior associate athletics director at the University of Arkansas. "In a relatively short amount of time, Mike Waddell began an impressive transformation of Towson University's NCAA Division I Intercollegiate athletics program," Towson University President Dr. Maravene Loeschke said in the release. "We wish him well at the University of Arkansas, and we know that he will bring the same energy, leadership, and excellence to his new job as he did here at Towson. He will be missed. The TU community wishes …

A 2012 college teaching position held by Councilman David Marks, while legal, should have triggered an amended financial disclosure report.
Baltimore County Councilman David Marks said Thursday that a 2012 teaching job at a local university should have been part of his required financial disclosures. Marks acknowledged the job and failure to file an amended report last year with the Baltimore County Ethics Commission during an interview. "It was an oversight," Marks, a Perry Hall Republican, said after being asked about the job. The undisclosed teaching job as well as two previously disclosed consulting positions do not appear to violate county law. Marks said the teaching job will appear in disclosure forms that he has already filed that will be made public next month. Following the interview, Marks issued a statement by email: "As soon I was offered a three-month teaching …

The state comptroller criticized the university president for not attending the Board of Public Works meeting Wednesday to defend her decision to eliminate the men's baseball and soccer teams.
Comptroller Peter Franchot Wednesday called on Towson University President Maravene Loeschke to resign. "The president of Towson, in my view, has forfeited her claim on moral leadership," Franchot said during the Board of Public Works meeting in Annapolis. "It's with a heavy heart, I believe, in the best interest of Towson University that she should resign." The Towson University president was not present during the meeting. Instead, she was scheduled to speak at a breakfast meeting of the BWI Business Partnership about 30 minutes north of Annapolis. Marina Cooper, deputy chief of staff to Loeschke, wrote in an email that Loeschkehas the support of the University of Maryland System, as well as students and faculty at the university. "It's …

The governor said the Towson University president may not have to come before the Board of Public Works next week.
Towson University President Maravene Loeschke may have an excused absence for next week's Board of Public Works meeting. Gov. Martin O'Malley Monday said he's not sure Loeschke will need to attend the meeting next week to answer questions about the elimination of the men's baseball and soccer programs. "I don't think I need her to [attend]," O'Malley said, adding that Loeschke had already been to Annapolis late last month to meet with him and Comptroller Peter Franchot. Loeschke has said that the programs needed to be eliminated because of concerns about federal Title IX laws that guarantee athletic participation for women attending college. The meeting with the governor resulted in $300,000 being added to a supplemental budget request to …

The Tuesday afternoon event, which drew several hundred Towson University community members, was organized by the Be the Change movement.
Several hundred members of the Towson University community marched in solidarity Tuesday afternoon to promote diversity and acceptance, and denounce the White Student Union. The White Student Union, which is not sanctioned by the college, has drawn intermittent national media attention since Towson student Matt Heimbach began recruiting members for the group in September 2012. Heimbach previously helmed the campus authorized Youth for Western Civilization, which disbanded after members wrote "white pride" in chalk at locations around campus. The group, which advocates for what Heimbach calls "white interests" and racial separateness, recently sparked an uproar with its plans to conduct on-campus crime patrols, claiming an increase in black…
A multicultural rally against the White Student Union at Towson University was held Tuesday afternoon.
Students at Towson University held a rally against the White Student Union at their school Tuesday afternoon. The rally was documented on social media sites like Twitter, Flickr and Instagram using the hashtags #bethechangeTU and #TuStands4. Earlier on Tuesday, school president Maravene Loeschke told WBAL radio that there was no such group on the Towson University campus. "There's not a white student union," Loeschke said of the group that is not sanctioned by the college. "They call themselves that but that's not what they are." "This is an outside group with one student in it and they will not be doing safety patrols on campus," Loeshcke said. Loeschke said student groups are not allowed to perform their own safety patrols on campus …

Maravene needs to spend some time in a Leadership class. Lying, deception, and total lack of transparency are not qualities of a good leader. Waddell's character is the only thing worse than his leadership skills. His ability to build a viable Strategy isn't his strong suit either. He is a salesman, of the used car variety. I say good riddance Mike. Don't let the gymnasium door hit you on the ass…   more ›
