Council Passes Amended Transgender Anti-Discrimination Bill

Bill establishing term limits for council members tabled.

UPDATED (9:07 a.m.)—A split Baltimore County Council approved a controversial transgender anti-discrimination bill Tuesday night by a 5-2 vote. The bill, sponsored by Councilman Tom Quirk, a Catonsville Democrat, prohibits discrimination against transgender individuals seeking housing, financing or employment. "It's a night for equality," said Quirk. "We sent a loud message that discrimination is wrong. This bill is about equality. This bill is about human rights." The vote went along party lines with Councilmen Todd Huff and David Marks, Republicans from Timonium and Perry Hall respectively, voting against the bill. Huff was not immediately available for comment after the meeting and did not return a call from a reporter seeking comment. …

Transgender Protections Bill Moves Toward Passage

Amendment to remove controversial public accommodations language has enough votes to pass. Readers can weigh in on the subject in our poll.

The Baltimore County Council appears set to approve a transgender anti-discrimination bill but it will likely pass with an amendment governing the use of public accommodations, including restrooms. A bi-partisan coalition has joined Democratic Councilman John Olszewski Sr. and Republican Councilman Todd Huff on an amendment that clarifies provisions governing the use of private and personal facilities, including bathrooms, in a bill sponsored by Councilman Tom Quirk. Quirk's bill seeks to prevent discrimination against transgender persons in employment, housing and finance. It's similar to one passed last year in Howard County. The bill as proposed did not require businesses to make such facilities available to transgender people but the …

Details of Occupy Wallstreet activities and the "glittering" of Republican candidates which seem to get a chuckle by the liberal pundits are a bit off topic. But, Mr. Quirk cleary believes his legisltatiion is correct, and his political area is generally very Democratic. My guess is many people are unaware of this proposal. I would think Mr. Quirk would want the attention of the protesters. This …   more ›

Teen Jailed Five Years For Beating at McDonald's

Chrissy Polis was attacked in a Rosedale McDonald's on April 18.

UPDATED(11:35 a.m.)—Teonna Brown will serve five years in jail for her involvement in the beating of a transgendered woman in a Rosedale McDonald's in April. Brown, 19, was sentenced by Circuit Court Judge John Grason Turnbull II to 10 years in jail, with five years suspended and two years of probation for the attack on Chrissy Polis. "[Brown] had every opportunity to disengage from this situation and chose not to," Turnbull said. The sentence was part of a plea agreement that resulted in Brown pleading guilty in August. Baltimore County State's Attorney Scott Shellenberger said prosecutors felt it was important Brown "receive significant time in jail." Brown, 19, and a 14-year-old girl were arrested and charged in the  April 18 attack on …

I am satisfied with the 5yr. jail sentence Ms. Brown received. Hopefully she will use the time to educate and rehabilitate herself, rather than become bitter and more hateful upon her release. Seems like there are so many angry people out there walking amongst us...it really scares me sometimes. I pray the victim of this crime is able to move on and live a happy, productive life! I never heard …   more ›

Community Rallies to Support Victim of Beating at McDonald's

Hundreds gather in Rosedale at the McDonald's where Chrissy Polis, 22, was attacked by two females.

Renee Carr hated to see her daughter, Chrissy Polis, assaulted by two females inside a Rosedale McDonald's on the now-infamous video that went viral on the Internet. “That video was difficult to watch and I’m so upset of everything Chrissy had to endure during that time,” Carr said. But Carr believes a lot of good can now be generated in the weeks and months following the assault of Polis, a 22-year-old transgender woman who grew up in Essex and Dundalk. To Carr, the first step in learning from the assault came on Monday night when hundreds of supporters of the transgender community turned out for a rally in front of the McDonald’s, located on the 6300 block of Kenwood Avenue. Organized by several transgender organizations, supporters …

This incident against a transgendered woman is appalling. Not only is the actual attack appalling, but also the underlying ignorance of the reality of transgendered individuals, especially in the U.S. A transgendered woman is exactly that - a woman. They are not genetic women, but they are women nonetheless. They just happened to be born with their gender and their body "out of alignment", for …   more ›
