West Towson, Dumbarton Students Finalists in Literature Letters Contest

The four local students were among 10 finalists selected around Baltimore County to participate in a statewide competition next month.

Two West Towson Elementary School and two Dumbarton Middle School students are among 10 in Baltimore County to be named finalists in the 2013 Maryland Letters About Literature Contest.  The statewide contest, coordinated by the Maryland Center for the Book, is part of a national contest sponsored by the Library of Congress’ Center for the Book, according to a news release from Baltimore County Public Schools.  Open to students in grades 4–10, the contest challenges young people to write to the author of a book that influenced their self-image or worldview. West Towson Elementary Taste-Off Advocates Healthy Eating

The day-long event encourages students to taste different types of produce.

The West Towson Elementary School Parent Teacher Association is encouraging students to eat healthy through a friendly competition. On Tuesday, the school is holding its second annual Food for Thought: West Towson Taste-Off, according to a news release. The competition encourages students to try different types of produce including sweet potatoes, snap peas, berries, arugula and cherry tomatoes, the release states. The students will rotate through eight different tasting stations, and each will receive a mark for every item tasted. The class that tastes the most produce, based on percentage, will receive extra recess time. West Towson Elementary Kicking Off Reading Program

The program, where students keep track of their minutes spent reading, runs for a four-week period.

West Towson Elementary School will kick off its reading incentive program with a Wednesday celebration. From 1:45 to 2:15 p.m., staff and students will curl up with a book in their pajames, according to a news release. The school's mascot Westy will also be in attendance to read along with the school community. The program runs for a four-week period, where students will track their minutes of reading, according to the release. The festivities will conclude with an event for the West Towson Elementary community at the Towson Barnes and Noble.

West Towson Elementary Celebrates Environmental Work

School officials will unveil a LEED certification plaque following a Monday assembly.

The West Towson Elementary School community will celebrate the work they have done to become a Maryland Green School at a Monday assembly. According to a news release, the school community has competed several projects to benefits the environment and increases students understanding of their impact on it. Following the assembly, the school will unveil a LEED certification plaque in the school lobby, according to the release. West Towson is Baltimore County Public Schools' first LEED certified building. Superintendent S. Dallas Dance is scheduled to attend the celebration. West Towson Elementary Assisting New York Students in Sandy Recovery

Personnel at Watson Elementary School in New York are collecting children's clothing for families in the area.

West Towson Elementary School is partnering with a New York school in a clothing drive to benefit families impacted by Superstorm Sandy. West Towson officials have asked parents, students and staff to donate gently used clothing for elementary age children, and drop them off at the school from Monday through Friday during school hours, according to a news release. The clothes will be transported to Watson Elementary School in Rockville Center, NY for distribution to local families in need.

Students lined up Tuesday to try a variety of fruits and vegetables, then vote their favorites.

  How do you know you don't like it if you've never tried it? That's been the refrain of generations of parents and at West Towson Elementary School on Tuesday, students could finally say they've tried spinach, broccoli, pears and other fresh fruits and vegetables at the West Towson Taste-Off. "We're working very hard at West Towson to develop some habits at this young age, so students develop healthy choices," principal Susan Hershfeld said. Platters of green beans, spinach, pears, broccoli, cucumbers, carrots, celery and oranges were donated by local grocers, including Wegmans, Whole Foods, The Fresh Market, Giant and Trader Joe's.
