Pitchers and catchers reported to spring training in Sarasota, Fla. on Tuesday with sky-high expectations following the team’s first winning season since the 1990s.
Last year, the O’s took their fans on an unexpected trip to the post season. The team, which was nearly universally picked to finish last in the AL East before the 2012 season, won 93 games, and went a ridiculous 29-9 in one run games. Many knowledgeable baseball writers still believe the success had more to do with luck than the skill of the Orioles. After all, the team only outscored their opponents by seven runs during the season, and using Pythagorean winning percentage, the team should have only finished 82-80, according to Baseball Reference. An offseason that saw no major additions to the roster, and a few key departures such as Mark Reynolds, has only added to the belief that the birds will return to being the punching bag for the …

A state senator wants a new state bird; one man's technolgical fortress is his castle; and the Senate president feels snubbed by Obama.
It's not a statue in front of the office building that bares his name but Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller did receive a bust of himself this week courtesy of the Regional Manufacturing Institute. Sen. Kathy Klausmeier, a Perry Hall Democrat, gave a sneak preview of the small, light-weight bust of Miller moments before presenting it to the Senate's top dog. "You can't have too much Mike Miller," Klausmeier said. The technology is similar to what was used in a scene of Jurassic Park 3 where a copy of a velociraptor's larynx was recreated. The institute offered legislators in Annapolis the opportunity to have themselves scanned into a computer and get busts of themselves. Miller seemed impressed with the petite bust but joked that it …
An open tryout will be held March 9 at Camden Yards.
You may not be the next Manny Machado, but you may have a shot at being the next Baltimore Orioles ballboy or ballgirl. The team will hold an open tryout starting at noon of March 9 at Camden Yards. The Orioles are looking for athletic men and women 18 or older for the 2013 season. Participants are asked to dress casually and bring their own baseball gloves, according to a news release. The team asks that ballboys and ballgirls be "personable, customer-service oriented and available to work the entire 2013 season," in addition to being able to field ground balls. Judges at the tryout will include Orioles officials, MASN broadcaster Jim Hunter, former Orioles catcher Chris Hoiles, Mix 106.5 personality Reagan Warfield and Lite 101.9 …

Baltimore's pitcher returned to St. Paul's Friday to speak to students.
It was the “little things” that Baltimore Orioles pitcher Steve Johnson said he remembers most fondly about his time in high school. Before donning the orange and black, Johnson was a blue and gold Crusader at St. Paul’s School where he visited Friday to speak with students. He shared stories about his experience in the minor leagues and coach Buck Showalter’s ability to switch from scary to funny like a light switch, among other things. “I like being able to come back and be somebody that they want to listen to. I’m one of them,” Johnson said. He preached to a chapel full of young men to enjoy their time being part of a team in high school. “I had a great time here. I loved playing here,” he said. Steve Johnson isn't the only major …

The retired Baltimore County Fire Department captain spends his days enhancing his trademark classic cars decorated in honor of the Orioles and Ravens franchises.
Parkton man Greg Hudnet is what you call a super fan—to put it mildly. At 63 years old Hudnet is a retired Baltimore County Fire Department captain who traded in a double starched white button down adorned with 36 years worth of medals for a fuzzy purple hat, matching camouflage pants, a bunch of big, bold, beaded necklaces and two unique cars. He is the Baltimore Birdman and he loves his hobby. Hudnet was an instant hit with fans Wednesday and Thursday at the Baltimore County Baby Boomer and Senior Expo. He charmed passersby with the stories behind the two cars that made him the type of guy Ravens defensive tackle Haloti Ngata invites over to his luau. “We’ve been Colts fans, Ravens fans our entire life,” Hudnet said of his family, …

The Oriole Bird is making a stop in Timonium and bringing drink specials with him.
Relax. It's best of five for a reason. Baltimore Orioles fans were, shall we say, less than pleased last night, following the New York Yankees' late innings homer. But that's why the Sumerians invented beer. If you're looking to turn that frustration around—or to commiserate with like minded fans—Hightopps Backstage Grille will be playing host to the Orioles Bird Thursday evening for a pep rally, featuring drink specials. Come for the orange and black. Stay for the $2.25 Miller Lite and Coors Light and $1 Bud Light specials. Always drink responsibly. Former Orioles All-Stars Chris Hoiles and Tippy Martinez will be in attendance to greet fans. Hightopps is located at 2306 York Rd, in Timonium. Parking is limited in the main lot. Consider …

Two Orioles season ticket holders tell the tale of a 15-year wait.
Debbie Dwyer and Rosie Cassidy have been patiently waiting. When the Rockville residents purchased an Orioles season-ticket plan 15 years ago, they were making an investment in the future. They knew someday it would pay off. Little did they know it would be 15 years. And little did they know in spring training that it would be this year. Patch caught up with Dwyer and Cassidy in their sweet seats before Game 2 of the American League Division Series. They normally sit on the first base side, so they were adjusting to their new digs, but you can see in the video how thrilled they were to be at Oriole Park at Camden Yards to experience the club's first playoff series since 1997. The Orioles and Yankees met in Game 3 Wednesday night. TELL US…

Brandon Davis and his mom, Edye Stewart, were at Oriole Park at Camden Yards Monday.
Brandon Davis decided he could do without some of his musical equipment. What he couldn't do without: experiencing an Orioles playoff game. So the Anne Arundel County native—a 2002 South River High School grad—hocked some of his personal items from his Miami residence in order to catch a flight and land a ticket to see the Orioles play in Game 2 of the American League Division Series Monday in Baltimore. Davis, 29, and his mother, Edye Stewart, sat about 10 rows off the field along the right field line as the Orioles defeated the Yankees, 3-2. See the video for more from Stewart and Davis. Davis is retired from the military. Monday was his first game at Oriole Park at Camden Yards since the 1997 season. The Orioles carried a similar …

I predict that I will be very happy when the season begins and I hope the O's do even better than last season. I went to a record number of games last year. I'd like to repeat that again too, although I can't make prediction on that yet.   more ›
