Tracey, if you have a fence around your yard and you have the average one-fifth of an acre lot for a single family home in Perry Hall that is about 8,000 square feet. or about 60 foot x 135 feet in size. That would be about 390 total feet of fence. Imagine a 6 foot high chain link fence around your yard, what do you think your would pay to have that fence installed with three gates? The site for the dog park is almost two acres and needs about 1,500 feet of six foot high fence, 9,000 square feet of fence. That is just the fence, nothing else in the park, no watering stations, no baggy stations, no benches, no play toys.

Just so you know, a quarter of an acre of build-able land in Perry Hall right now is worth about $200,000.

The Dundalk area has a dog park that has been approved for funding.

The economic climate argument is an interesting one. Clearly the County has revenues coming in and a portion of that is set aside for Parks & Recreation Capital Projects. In addition the state has Program Open Space funds collected from a portion or the real estate transfer tax and some of that is distributed to the Counties with its use very restricted.

It is a matter of priority of projects, not a matter of the economic climate I believe.

Nice to meet you Mr. Hurley (I assume that is your real name and not just an anonymous troll?). Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but not their own facts. But we are all responsible for our own libelous statements.

I don't ask for handouts from the government nor have I ever received one. We can disagree about the "substandard" nature of the homes we built and the increase in value all, yes all, of our customers received over their initial investment.

I have some roads that I need to have built with brick islands. Wonder if I can hire the County at that price? I wonder if a zero is missing?

Donna, you state that "All people really need is a place for dogs to be able to run free and play safely.". The purpose of controlling access to the Dog Park is exactly that.

Only registered members who have agreed to the rules of the Dog Park, proven their dogs are properly vaccinated and licensed will have access to the Dog Park. Although it may sound like a luxury to some, it is actually a necessity to control who uses the park.

The proposed park is nearly two acres with about 1,500 feet of six foot high fencing. The fencing is by far the most significant portion of the cost.

Tim, my head is fine, thank you for asking, had it checked last week. I can give you a referral if you like.

Under your scenario, should we stop all funding of everything that is below "our collective children's needs"? That appears to be what you are suggesting?

I have stated before that I don't believe in air conditioning in schools as the first plan of action. I would rather try alternatives to air conditioning before spending millions upon millions of dollars on something that is only used a small part of the school year. Such as lengthening the school day, reducing holidays, vacations, and "teacher" days and thus shortening the school year by finishing earlier and starting later.

Tim, I would respond that each person has their own set of priorities for needs or perceived luxuries. We all pay for many things we don't use such as senior citizen centers, schools, parks, etc.

I disagree with your reference to air conditioning. If they are "our" children, then are they "our" dogs as well? I believe it is well established that the presence of pets in the home is very beneficial to the mental health of humans.

The other two operating Dog Parks in Baltimore County both charge membership fees which reduces the burden of maintenance/improvement costs for the County.
