The Greene Turtle Returning To Towson
TOWSON, MD — The Greene Turtle is coming back to Towson. Leho Poldmae, who owns Neo Pizza in Owings Mills and whose history with The Greene Turtle franchise dates to 1995, is part of the effort.
When he was scouting for a location for Neo Pizza in Towson, he found a spot he liked but said it was too big. He passed along the info to The Greene Turtle, which exited town in 2020 when restaurateurs with a different business plan — Barley’s Backyard Uptown — took over the lease.
”I’ve partnered with Greene Turtle corporate to bring it back to Towson,” Poldmae told the Baltimore County Liquor Board on Monday.
He said the company agreed to move into the spot where Lotsa Pizza used to be near Whole Foods, if he would come aboard to help.
“We’ll have plenty of space for dining,” Poldmae said, noting the eatery will have the same menu as other Greene Turtle restaurants. “It’s going to be operated primarily by corporate.”
To control the sale of alcohol, Poldmae said the restaurant would have someone monitoring the door, would card anyone who looked under 40 and would use the latest technology for ensuring those drinking alcohol were over 21.
“As fast as the technology is advancing, that’s how fast the students are advancing,” Liquor Board Chair Susan Green said as a word of caution regarding ID scanners. “We notice we’re getting a more sophisticated student base at Towson University.”
Poldmae and his director of operations stated they were mindful of the need to be cautious about the sale of alcohol given their location in a college town and considered it a “critical conversation” internally.
It was not clear when The Greene Turtle may open in Towson.
“Nothing has been going well” with the construction project, Poldmae said, but if it did, it could hypothetically open by December.
Poldmae also plans to return to the liquor board in the coming weeks regarding a liquor license for Neo Pizza, which he aims to open on Pennsylvania Avenue.
