BALTIMORE COUNTY - Samantha Warfel, an upcoming graduate of Hereford High School, has been honored as the 'Young Woman of the Year' by the Baltimore County Commission for Women.
The commission, which annually acknowledges the accomplishments of three local women, is set to honor Warfel and her fellow award recipients at a ceremony scheduled for June 22nd.
"Her academic, advocacy, and community service accomplishments are truly impressive, but even more striking are Samantha's character, her genuine caring for others, and her commitment to empowering others," praised BCPS Superintendent Dr. Darryl L. Williams.
Numerous service and leadership roles have marked Warfel's high school tenure. From 2020 to 2023, she headed the Baltimore County Student Councils and held multiple positions within the Maryland Association of Student Councils Executive Board.
She also donated her time to her peers at Hereford High School, leading the United Nations Girl Up organization club, serving as a peer tutor in various subjects, managing the Allied Sports bocce team, and guiding new students around campus. Warfel also earned the Maryland Seal of Biliteracy for Spanish.
The young leader's community involvement extended beyond school boundaries as well. She interned at the Women's Housing Coalition of Baltimore, acted as a youth diplomat with the World Trade Center Institute, and was a research and course design intern at the University of Maryland International Studies Scholars Program. Her exceptional leadership led to her receiving the Outstanding Student Leader of the Year Award for Baltimore County in 2020 by the Maryland Association of Student Councils and an Optimist International Youth Citation this year. Notably, Warfel has been published in the International Journal of Student Research.
Warfel plans to further her academic pursuits at Yale University in the fall, where she will study global affairs with a focus on pre-law.
