MARYLAND - Nearly $24 million will be distributed among Maryland municipalities in 2023 as part of ongoing settlements related to the opioid crisis, Maryland's Attorney General Anthony G. Brown announced on Wednesday.

The payment is part of a settlement reached in 2022, resolving major opioid manufacturing companies' liability to the state for illegally marketing and distributing addictive painkillers.

Under the settlement, companies including McKesson, Cardinal Health, Amerisource Bergen, and Johnson & Johnson will pay around $395 million toward abating the opioid crisis in Maryland over the next 18 years.

"This is about standing up against the devastation and offering a path to healing and restoration for our communities," Attorney General Brown said.

Of the nearly $24 million, around $10 million will be allocated to the State's Opioid Restitution Fund for opioid-related initiatives. An additional ~$8.8 million will be used for targeted grants to 58 qualifying subdivisions. The remaining $4.9 million has been directly distributed to local governments.

The following counties and cities taking part part in the settlements are slated to receive funds as outlined in the table below. According to the Office of the Attorney General, final calculations are subject to approval by the Opioid Operational Command Center.
