The Arc Baltimore Honors Swanisha Hinton for Excellence in Management

This post expresses the views and opinions of the author(s) and not necessarily that of Towson Patch management or staff.

Swanisha Hinton, Director of Quality Enhancement at The Arc Baltimore, is the recipient of the organization’s 2023 Excellence in Management Award.

Presented annually to an administrative staff member at The Arc Baltimore, the award recognizes the ability to plan and implement programs and manage staff and resources effectively. It also honors the recipient’s commitment to professional self-advancement and advancement for subordinates, and dedication to normalization and advocacy.

“To her staff, Swanisha Hinton exemplifies excellence as a leader and mentor who helps them problem solve,” says Kathleen Durkin, The Arc Baltimore’s Chief Executive Officer. “Swanisha is goal-oriented and collaborates with other departments to create positive change through training and by equipping staff to make better choices. She has a laser focus on the health and safety of the people The Arc supports and keeps their rights and independence in the forefront.”

Hinton recently led The Arc Baltimore through a visit by the Office of Health Care Quality (OHCQ). Her calm approach and provision of documentation, professional interactions, and communications with both OHCQ and the many staff resulted in high marks for The Arc, as well as strengthened programming.

The Excellence in Management Award was presented during The Arc Baltimore’s recent Annual Meeting and Awards Reception. The event honors individuals who have gone “above and beyond” in their service to the organization and the people with developmental disabilities who are recipients of its programs and services.

“The Annual Meeting is our opportunity to honor all those who have given so much of themselves to the mission of The Arc Baltimore, from community partners and volunteers to supported individuals, staff members, and other heroes of the organization,” explains Durkin. “It is their hard work that is at the very heart of our vision for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live independently, work in meaningful jobs, and enjoy friendships and activities in the community.”

As in past years, the 2023 Annual Meeting and Awards Reception featured a number of recognitions, as well as the election of The Arc Baltimore’s new board of directors and officers.

The Arc Baltimore supports people with developmental disabilities (autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability) to lead fulfilling lives with a sense of belonging, purpose, and meaningful relationships. The Arc provides employment training and support, day and residential services, family support and education, treatment foster care, respite care, public policy advocacy, and information and referrals.
